Nemesis closure date confirmed

Wednesday 21 September 2022 11:49

Alton Towers have today revealed that Nemesis will close on the last day of the 2022 main season, Sunday 6th November. Social media posts and a promotional email to those on the park’s mailing list confirmed the inverted coaster will close on the third and final day of the resort’s annual Fireworks Spectacular. The same image has also appeared this morning on billboards across the park, stating the ride is closing “By order of the Phalanx”, due to the beast’s “abnormal behaviour”.

Alton Towers submitted plans back in January for the now 28 year old ride to have the majority of its track and supports replaced, strengthen footers and foundations, as well as carry out some minor maintenance on the station building. Planning permission for the works was not believed to be required, however a Certificate of Lawfulness was sought to ensure that the works they intended to carry out would not need a full planning application. Approval for this was confirmed by the local council and a certificate issued at the end of March 2022.

Proposed retracking plan for Nemesis

While the ride theme is not thought to be being changed, the famous “Nemesis roar” bellowing throughout Forbidden Valley will. The current track is hollow, however the new track will be sand filled which will somewhat dampen the sound made as the ride’s trains hurtle around the track.

Along with today’s social media reveal of the closure, the resort have announced the ride will be out of action for the duration of the 2023 season. Nemesis will reopen in 2024, returning for the ride’s 30th birthday.

News of the coaster’s closure comes only weeks after the nearby indoor ride Duel closed for refurbishment on 6th September. A reopening date hasn’t yet been announced for the Mack manufactured dark ride, although its closure is expected to be much shorter than the one required for Nemesis.

There’s been plenty of speculation on the works over on our forum, and as always TowersStreet will bring you updates as the end of the season approaches and throughout the course of the work.
