RollerCoaster Tycoon World

Looks a mix of what made RCT 2 good with the 3Dish graphics of 3. Something in the middle.

---

Atari announced RollerCoaster Tycoon World, the newest installment in the amusement park simulation series for PC.

Developed by Pipeworks, RollerCoaster Tycoon World once again puts players in charge of a theme park, complete with rides, shops, patrons and, of course, the titular roller coasters. Park maintenance and customer happiness need to be tended to, as well as overall construction and expansion efforts. But in the newest installment, players can also cooperate with up to four players to manage one massive amusement park.

"Many of the new features in RollerCoaster Tycoon World were not possible a few years ago, but we have taken advantage of technological improvements to offer a wildly fun gaming experience that stays true to the storied franchise," Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said in a press release.

Other players' parks can be visited, and coaster blueprints can be shared online as well –– Pipeworks wants to make RollerCoaster Tycoon World the most connected Tycoon title yet.

Atari said RollerCoaster Tycoon World is a full PC experience, and will be "micro-transaction free," so players will have access to all of the content at release.

Okay, not much to get excited over seeing as though we've seen less than a couple of seconds worth of the graphics.

However, from what I can see, it looks nothing like the monstrosity that was RCT4 Mobile. So I'm holding out hope for this one!

I appear to be the only one with a dislike to this.

I think the art is such a step back in time from RCT3. The coaster in the video looks good, but the area surrounding it makes it look more like a 1995 release, as opposed to 2015.

That trailer is all pre-rendered.

The developer has not got a substantial portfolio, cheap console games, poker games and a random project for the US military.

it might be great, it might be crap. Don't get to excited.

I'm excited purely cos it's a new full RCT game. It's incredibly hard to judge anything off the trailer but I'm just excited we have a new one!

It's far too little to proberly judge the game on. However, it's not gripping me. The best thing I can say is the lighting looks stunning, but we all know that things like that always look great in trailer videos that have all the time in the world to render to perfection.

The biggest problem will be what we always have with new RCT games, it will take a good year or so for the custom scenery makers to start churning out CSOs. The stuff that comes with the game will be worthless as always. And for those of us that have huge collections of custom stuff, going back to basics will be very annoying.

At least they have finally twigged that coasters need stairs on the lifthill. But I actually prefer to add my own stairs / supports etc anyway, so they can be exactly how I want them, rather than "generic".

I've just been thinking, does anyone actually play RCT3 without custom scenery anymore? Every project I've ever seen has been a real complex park or coaster which is inundated with mass packs of CS or CFRs, CTRs and CTs.

Not so sure about this, the short little segment of what I presume to be in game footage looks atrocious and the inclusion of multiplayer elements makes me wonder if we'll be seeing some always online DRM a la Sim City. Also the fact that all of the developers titles are shovelware is concerning. Doubt it's going to be any good, but as always I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'm genuinely surprised to see so many negative views from the outset here.

Forgive my non-gamer speak, but here are my few cents.

Given that RCT3 was a really huge leap from the styles of 1 & 2 and as such there wasn't much focus on SUPERGRAPHIX, I'm pleased to see that they graphics are much better in this version.

As an occasional game player, all I want is free-building ability for coasters (not grid based), some decent graphics (not those irritating hexagonal looking rails on coasters) and FUN!!!!

If I wanted THE NEXT BIG THING in gaming then I'd hop out, grab a copy of latest number 1 in the gaming chart and spend my life drop-jawed at the epic prettiness.

Personally I cannot wait for this :D!!

Just to point out the footage for 99% of that video is a real roller coaster (haven't worked out which one yet). Some of you might have twigged this already but I wasn't too sure :p

As for the other 1% to me it just looked like a moded version of RCT3. Too little to judge from.

I'm being negative, because all signs point towards a negative outcome so far.

We have no in game footage, it's a relativity unknown developer with a terrible portfolio, and since it's coming out "early 2015" if it was any good, they would have some decent screenshots by now, I fear it will be rushed.

positive side, they said no micro-transactions. but that's probably due to the backlash from the mobile thing.

Would love to be proved wrong.

Tim's right, it's Goliath at Magic Mountain.

This is what the game looks like:

So we still have the ludicrous shops and weird scale and cartoony trees but at least the paths are less rigid, rides and buildings look like they can be freely rotated and maaaaaaaybe, the coaster building is off-grid.

At its heart though, RCT has always been a management game rather than a realistic simulation - could any of the challenges ever be completed by building something realistic? It was really the advent of CS/CTRs/CFRs etc. that transformed it into a simulator, with people using it as a platform to try build super realistic coasters/parks/landscapes. Same with graphics - it has always thrived with its cartoony style, yet it was modders who applied Ambient Occlusion, changed ground textures with Texmod, and CS makers who use photorealistic textures.

From the press release this will be another game in the classic, cartoony management style that made the previous games such a success. I don't blame them for going in this direction and not catering to the super-specific needs of a community that have already transformed RCT3 into a simulator, or indeed who use NL2 instead.

Excellent point - no limits will cater for the die hard coaster creators! Also Theme Park Studio seems to be coming along nicely as a higher spec game...
