Fireworks 2020: CANCELLED

Hi guys. Out of interest, is it known when the MAP reservations for Fireworks will come online?

Also, while I’ve made the thread, what sort of things do you expect to see in this year’s display? Could we see it centre around the park’s 40th birthday, and a theme of “40 years of memories” or something like that? It should be interesting regardless, as I’m yet to ascertain how a socially distant fireworks display will work!

Please not a memories theme again, surely they've done that that to death by now.

It was the only thing I could really think of that links in with the park’s 40th birthday, which will inevitably be part of the show.

If they do have a memories theme, I hope they won't use C̶a̶n̶o̶n̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶D̶ Maroon 5: Memories which I hate. On a more serious note though, I would like to know how they plan on social distancing given how much of the lawn is usually used for launching fireworks.

Just noticed The Fireworks dates are not available to purchase now they are greyed out ?

I was thinking of a through the decades theme, starting with the heritage, then the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s, with a finale 'looking to the future'.

Could get good old Sir Al' back and have it as a new time machine he has created to explore the history of the Towers.

Or get Dr Pop Rocket back, either will do.

I would prefer that over another memories theme.

Towers have been exploring different areas to launch fireworks in order to fully utalise the lawns for guests.

In terms of actually ensuring guests socially distance. Something like the recent concert at Gosforth park would work well at Towers.

Or an alternative solution could be to paint circles across the lawns/Towers Street.

My main concern would be how they safely disperse guests from the lawns/Towers Street. They either need lots of staff to assist with guest flow and social distancing, or maybe they will leave guests to it and it will be a free for all.

A few weeks ago the Fireworks posters were covered throughout the park with the '6th, 7th & 8th November' changed to 'selected dates throughout November', I wonder whether the greyed out dates on the website is something to do with that?

It wouldn't surprise me if the season were extended to the end of November, and fireworks ran for 3 or 4 weekends at a smaller scale than we are used to. We should find out soon hopefully.

Given that Chessington has extended the season until 29th November, I wouldn’t be too surprised if we saw Towers do the same, especially as more Fireworks dates would offer greater opportunities for both social distancing and fulfilling demand at the same time.

However, wouldn’t that breach the noise order the park had placed on them back when the Ropers pursued their infamous court case back in the 2000s, which limited them to only 3 Fireworks displays per year?

I'm thinking with the money spent and effort they're going to have to put in with fireworks this year they'll want as many full paying guests as possible. Will probably release about 3 tickets for the thousands of passholders to scramble for about a week before it starts once they've made their money back off the paying punters. Damned passholders trying to get in for free! (Shakes fist)

According to a user on the MAP Facebook page, someone on the Towers phone line told them the Fireworks were cancelled. Someone else messaged them afterwards and they replied with
Our Fireworks event hasn't been cancelled. We are currently working out our plans for our Fireworks event. Watch this space!"

Still no guarantees of course, but at least there's some hope they'll be going ahead.

I just do not see how they could do anything but lose a load of money with a fireworks event. It does not take that many guests for the lawns and Towers Street to become very busy, so there would have to be a cap on capacity that is stricter than what they have at the moment. 10,000 people spread across a large theme park is fine but the best part of those 10,000 people all in one place and there goes your social distancing.

I would imagine that they are still able to plan for the show though, and if it is cancelled those plans just rollover to next year. By now you would expect the design of the fireworks and audio to be pretty much completed.

Surely they would need the square on the floor strategy seen at other festivals for groups to stand in, with walkways between them all. Clearly not enough space for 10,000 people to do that on the lawns. Plus they'd need to light the area so you could see the boxes.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a government restriction on fireworks displays appear. Probably on 4th November at 11pm.

You can buy fireworks to stimulate the economy, but you must store them in a bucket of water until October 2021.

Well the people at towers making the decisions on the fireworks certainly got a headache planning.
The upward curve in covid cases is not helping with fireworks preparation

I would feel broadly safe on the lawn watching the fireworks, we move down onto the lawn anyway and I think there is usually 1-2m between groups just naturally. Stood outdoors like that for 45 minutes seems OK. The area closer to Towers Street does seem more packed though.
The issue is dispersal. Soon as the display finishes everyone moves to go and do more rides or head to the car park and then you get more people in a small area and is definitely going to be the planning headache.

The problem with a fireworks event is even if you get people socially distanced on the lawns, once the display is finished then everybody will want to leave at the same time. Ideally everybody would need to stay put and wait until directed, but I just can't see how that would work in reality.

If the case number continue to rise and the hospitals continue to fill up, then the decision whether the firework event goes ahead might be taken out of their hands if a local or national lockdown is forced. Like the others have said, I still don't see how they can put one on safety with social distancing in mind and the surge of people that want to leave or even large crowds gather to wait for rides to reopen in the firing zones
