A new look Talk forum: Coming Fri 6th June

Hello all!

As you may have seen recently, we cancelled our forum maintenance plans and brought forward some plans we had for the future to look at new forum software for TowersStreet. The decision was mostly influenced by the fact that SMF, our current software platform, is lacking in any kind of development due to issues with their team, and our forum is continually experiencing issues with things like the thanks, alerts and speed/load on the server.

We've spent some time testing forum packages for a while knowing this point would inevitably come in time, and the team have settled upon a forum software package called XenForo. We chose this as it offered a sleek style that looked great, offered lots of features out of the box without us having to hack the forum to death, was easy to administer, and has active development, moving away from the traditional free software we've used up until now.

Maintenance Day - Friday 6th June

After much testing, we've now set the move date for next Friday, 6th June 2014. The maintenance for the forum move will begin around 10am, and should end a few hours later - although as usual we are penning a whole day in just in case of issues.

The forum, wiki and ridecount will be unavailable during this time, however all access will be restored once we have the new forum in place.

Our brilliant testers (@Amy , @Dar , @Mike , @Tom.B and @Danny ) have been checking everything out for us and given lots of feedback on the interface and design, which we've tweaked to get the best experience for you. I'm sure they would be happy to say how much better the forum operates and works from their feedback to the team so far!

We have a tweaked look with new controls and options, and tonnes of new features we hope you'll find useful in the new forum. Over the coming days, we'll be bringing you screenshots and snippets of those features so you can get to know the new forum before the big day.

Obviously we know people hate change - of course you all love what you've become familiar with, but we've really thought carefully about things, had a few debates along the way (such as the placement of buttons! :p) and really tried to look at every element as best possible. There will inevitably be changes to site designs in life (hi Facebook!), and we hope that you'll grow to love ours in time too, but we'll be highlighting those along the way so you can feel right at home come Friday.

So, lets start having a look at our new home....

A fresh, clean and clearer look

We've tweaked fonts and sizes to make things as clean and clear as possible, whilst still retaining our familiar purple feel. Here's a look at our new board index page...

forum_index.png

We've still got some work to do to sort out our overall site header, so we'll be looking at the design of that (the big purple striped menu across the top!) in the coming weeks :)

thread.png

Threads now have a clearer look, and all the controls are easier to see at the bottom of a post - right where you need them after reading through the text. We know this is quite a big change, but we feel it's the most natural feel - after all, if you've read the post, your eyes are naturally near the end and then the buttons/actions come next.

quick_reply.png

Quick reply is now the default focus when you hit quote, but the separate page is only a click away with 'More options...' if you want to lose the clutter and focus on your post.

Styling is done in a more natural 'word processing' style of highlight and click, but for those BBcode loves it still accepts normal BBcode markup also!

Similar threads offer you a path of what might be interesting after this thread too, so you can explore the past and present postings of the community.

message_drafts.png

Writing a long post and closed your browser by accident? Or clicked away to another tab? Fear not, the forum now automatically saves a draft of your post every 30 seconds, or when you click the save button. That essay on the Air Tunnel will be lost no more!

likes.png

Our old friend is back, and better than ever! LIKES! :D And we've got some new like things for you too, but that's a secret for now... sssh ;)

profile_card.png

Want to quickly check someone out? You no longer need to browse away to another page, as clicking on usernames or avatars brings a smart little popup where you can check out other members... and even drop them a message if you want ;)

popup.png

The speedy way of getting around doesn't end with profile cards. Your messages and alerts are shown right on the page, and with a quick hover reveals all, without disturbing what you were reading or working on.

profile_dropdown.png

Your name is now the home of all your controls and options... and we've got lots to explore in here later on!

shoutbox.png

Fear not, the shoutbox is still there, and now supporting images and colours and topic notifications too! It's the shoutbox, but bettererererr.

There's still so much to explore...

We've barely scratched the surface... but hopefully we'll bring you the details of more things to look out for on Friday.

I have more questions!

We're also putting together a FAQ to help you transition as there's a few things you need to know, and we know you'll want to get stuck in without getting frustrated.

We've also implemented a dedicated help system for the new forum, where you can get all the answer to questions you might have, or fire off a simple email to us if your answer isn't there!

So, we hope you'll love what you've seen so far, and we're prepared for one of our biggest changes so far as a site - so we're more than happy to answer your questions and queries along the way too, and welcome your thoughts and ideas too.

Thanks everyone, and lookout for some more updates coming very soon! :D

It's great, really!

It's seriously easy to use, all the functions you need are really intuitive to use! It's not a massive departure from the current forum and layout, I know Joel spent a long, lonely, night making sure it kept a nice familiar but refreshed look!

Exciting! :D

So many exclamation marks!! :p

I am rather surprised that despite all our forum spammage, the 'like' button isn't broken yet!

Well, I'm impressed. The new forum seems to resemble the current one, yet looks fresher, and should be great to use. Great to see that the 'Thanks' button is coming back in the form of a 'like' button, although I can't help but feel that this is aimed at me... :p I'm not 100% sure on placing date and time of postage at the bottom of each post, as I'd much prefer them to be at the top. Hopefully, this is something that might be able to be changed in user settings, but if not, then I think I'll probably get used to it. The other new features look brilliant as well, and I'm looking forward to playing with them once everything's all sorted! :)

One quick question, though - will user tagging still be present when XenForo's fully installed and working?

EDIT: And I've just noticed that the upgrade should be complete a few days before the site's second birthday on Wednesday 11th June! :D

User tagging's currently in use, Jon. ;)

Yes, there's not much in the way of lost features, but all the basics are present in the new forum, including tagging, alerts, Tapatalk, shoutbox etc.

There is some changes to the way some features work - and we'll be posting about these later this evening to help people understand them better.

Unfortunately there isn't an option to customise the placement of buttons, but if XF add on we'll look at it. Although you've all learnt them to be at the top of a post, it does make more (natural) sense to have them at the end, and after a while it feels more comfortable too :)

No doubt it will take some getting used to after god knows how many years of basically the same forum design on TTF/TST but I must say it does look good! Looking forward to seeing some of the new features. Particularly like that it is able to save drafts, nothing more frustrating than wording a rant perfectly only to accidentally lose it and try and remember it as best you can word for word! :p

Or writing a trip/meet report!

Ooooh, very nice! One thing I am concerned about though is the loss of the user profile box in the top right corner, that used to be on every page of the website. It used to be kinda handy whenever I'm looking through other pages and I get a notification.

Other than that though, its fab! :)

The 'Alerts' button in the top right of the forum essentially does the same thing. :)

Edit: Derp. Read this wrong, the Alerts button only does this on the forum.

Yeah, we did mention in our previous maintenance topic that it was unfortunately our intention to withdraw it even with the current forum software - the load it puts on the server to display that information on every page was unfortunately ridiculous, and it was effectively loading the whole forum in the background (on the server) in order just to show you that bit of information.

- Site wide alerts/messages to be removed
Again evaluating the usage and performance of this feature has led to its removal, and you will now only see 'alerts' and 'message counts' when you are browsing the forum pages within the /talk/ section of the site. You should continue to see your sign-in information and avatar on other pages, but we will not feature alerts or message notifications any longer.

Most of our analytics show that it isn't really used - those that are logged into the site stay mostly within the forum itself, so it effectively wasn't worth the performance hit for so little it got used. (And just to clarify, even if someone wasn't logged in and was a 'Guest', it was still loading the whole forum in the background of each page viewed!).

We are investigating at least a way to show if you're logged in on the site with the new forum software, but it wouldn't show message information unfortunately at this time.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Joel and the rest of the team for their hard work on the new forum. It really is fantastic to use, and I really appreciate the time and effort they put into making the site the best it can be for the users. :D

I have got used to the old design, of course, but I really like the new design! I'm looking forward to seeing any new features, and I am so glad that there will be a 'like' button.

Thank you for all your hard work! :D

Try not to worry too much, there's been a LOT of work put in to allow it to look as familiar as possible. Obviously there is stuff that's changed but we'll be working hard to explain the differences, and there'll be plenty of help if you're stuck. After using it for a week or so now, I can say everyone should get used to it pretty quickly :).

Looking good so far guys. :) My minor thoughts are:

* The background of posts seems to be a lighter colour (almost white) than the current forum. As someone who surfs in the dark a lot I'm not a fan of white backgrounds for text. The shade(s) on the current forum are fine though, not sure if it's easy to change this or if it's part of the template?

* Is there any way to rename "like" back to "thanks"? Just to avoid being too facebooky.

Other than that, it looks good to me!

Oh, quick thought, will there still be a mobile version of the site? And if so, is there any way to make the all important thanks button work on it? ;)

I am sure tweaks will be made but from what I can tell it looks pretty awesome.
