2014: General Discussion

According to the air ambulance's Twitter, it was a response to a cardiac arrest where off duty medical professionals (I assume they mean guests? ) saved a man's life. Glad he is okay.

West Midlands Ambulance Service have released Information on the Medical incident.

Wednesday 4th June 2014

A man who suffered a cardiac arrest at Alton Towers in North Staffordshire earlier today is tonight recovering in hospital thanks to the quick actions of passers-by and Alton Towers staff.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called by staff at Alton Towers at around 4.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday) after a man suffered a cardiac arrest within the theme park grounds. A community paramedic, an ambulance crew and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The 41-year-old man was walking through the theme park with his family when he suddenly collapsed and went into cardiac arrest.

“A passing off duty GP and ambulance technician quickly rushed to his aid followed by a community first responder from Alton Towers who bought an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from the medical centre.

“The team quickly commenced CPR, administering about eight cycles of chest compressions on the man. They used the defibrillator to deliver two shocks to the man’s heart and successfully managed to restart his heart.

“When the first ambulance staff arrived the man was breathing for himself and, when the air ambulance landed, he was sitting up and talking. The man was assessed by ambulance staff and given further treatment before he was airlifted to University Hospital North Staffordshire where he was said to be in a stable condition upon arrival.

“This was an excellent example of how important it is to start CPR quickly in cardiac arrest cases. If it hadn’t been for the bystanders and CFR, ambulance staff commented that it was unlikely the man would’ve survived.”

I am so Glad this incident had a good outcome

Wow! Really glad the man is ok, and great to hear that AT have a defibrillator and that it was used so effectively.

Is there a 'Love' button (as opposed to Like)? :)

P.S - I'm obviously referring to the the fact that this person survived and the excellent quick response by the public and services. This could have been a very different outcome a couple of decades back.

That really is great to hear, glad he is ok! Well done to all those who helped to save his life!

:)

Indeed. Saw the air ambulance landing on Wednesday. Glad the person survived.

Anyway..... Going back to the resort. . Went in the waterpark on Friday. 23 degrees, not a cloud in the sky.... And guess what..... The outside water slides didn't open until 12:15.... Then closed at 3pm.

Unbelievable. I asked one of the lifeguards why, he told me it's because they get extra staff coming in for those three hours. He agreed with me it was crazy on lovely sunny days and lots of people complain.

Another example of Alton being unable to adapt to the weather conditions to keep guests happy.

That's absolutely shocking! The weather is forecast 5 days or more in advance and is usually pretty accurate. I think I'm right in saying today's 5 day is as accurate as a 1 day forecast was 20-30 years ago...

Obviously they need extra staff to man the outside areas but it's a joke that they only had them open for that short space of time. Can't imagine indoors was particularly pleasant while they were closed either.

I was just mentioning weather forecasts rather than outdoors. I completely agree that outdoor should be open at least until close even if they have to open late.

Well considering it was meant to be heavy rain today, and yet it's bright sunshine tends to suggest the opposite.
I said the forecast was as accurate as a 1 day used to be. Not that it was correct all the time.

Good luck and get well soon to the person who suffered the cardiac. Arrest. It's an amazing story and shows that towers can handle these emergencies well.

Well - it is a bit naughty that someone paying £15 to get in may have a different experience to someone else paying the same amount.

Another thing I remembered - at the entrance, my mate paid for 5 people and used his annual pass. The woman on the entrance wanted to see their annual passes. Only my mate has one, and in the past, the price has included discount on the total price. However, she would only do 1 annual pass discount and 4 full price. My friend politely argued it, and said about the restaurants in the hotels, in the theme park, etc etc giving discount. She eventually backed down and gave him the discounted rate, but I wonder if she was either a jobsworth or if AT are starting to crack down on this.

Saying that, we never had any problems in the hotels or restaurants when paying as a group for food and drink and getting discount. Technically, I guess AT are correct, but at the same time, if thats the case then it needs to be a resort wide rule.

Yes you got to hand it to them, they really shine with medical emergencies.
From what I have seen of the AT medical team, it is quite impressive. It looks like AT take pride in being able to offer very good medical support in a remote area.
The last time I checked, AT medical acted as Community first responders for the local area. The drivers cleared to respond to CFR calls on Emergency warning devices (blues and siren).

Alton Towers are giving all dads a "free" fast track between the 15 - 20 June... of course there's Ts&Cs, because Merlin. Basically when mum or kids have purchased a fast track, Merlin will match them, and this works for any of the fast track packages or single tickets.

Basically, an opportunistic marketing scheme to sell more Fastracks around Father's Day.

I'm not cynical at all.

reading between the lines, it is "we are testing out 2 for 1 on fastrack tickets to see if we sell more"

That'll never work because they have caps set on how many they will sell during the day so they would make half as much money! Unless they "forget" they have caps set.
