I understand that there used to be a smoke machine on Rita that let out a puff of smoke when she launched, to imitate dust under the road, however I've never seen this working, and I know the smoke machine - or certainly the pipe that the smoke came out of - is still there.

This lead me on to wonder whether there's any other broken effects on any other rides that used to be working, but now don't. Do you know of any?
 
I'm sure the smoke machine in Rita's station was there and working earlier this season.

I seem to remember seeing the dye on Nemesis has run out, Does that count?

It's not ran out exactly. It's just never coming back thanks to a stupid mistake followed by a stupid management decision.

A lot of effects at Alton Towers either don't work or work infrequently, presumably because there isn't actually anyone whose job it is to consistently manage them. Either technical services don't do it because they have 'more important things on their plates' or ride staff don't do it because it probably isn't actually their job. Entertainments don't do it because they're stretched as it is... Examples of either temperamental or entirely broken special effects in the park include:

- Nemesis Gun smoke
- Nemesis Bus smoke
- Nemesis waterfalls and/or colour
- Nemesis Sub Terra water sprays
- Nemesis Sub Terra queueline televisions
- Duel exterior zombie smoke
- Duel indoor SFX
- Runaway Mine Train bell
- Runaway Mine Train smoke in boiler
- Runaway Mine Train tunnel smoke
- Flume tunnel effects
- Th13teen smoke effects
- Rita launch smoke
- Hex smoke
- Hex projector quality
- Oblivion mist effect
- Oblivion queueline televisions
- The Smiler (Marmaliser effects)
- The Smiler (indoor mist/smoke)
- Sonic Spinball queueline games

I am sure there are others...
 
I've only ever experienced Hex once with smoke, and that was on my latest visit, back in early September... and it REALLY improved the experience no end!

I've thought of another: Thirteen's shutter!
 
Hex's rain effect. But I don't know whether it's been removed completely or just abandoned.

Oh and has the waterfall in Katanga Canyon been working? I can't recall it seeing it working for a while, but just seeing the green algae hanging off the edge.
 
I'm surprised they've never tried putting together a new department/team that deals with park wide effects. I guess that would be way off the cards at the present time though.
 
Its sad when you see the parks 2 newest rides (Smiler and N:ST) on this list next to iconic rides such as nemesis.

Also whoever suggested Charlie.... I assume you mean the effects missing from Toyland Tours, because lets not speak about the current shambles of a ride.
 
Shutter was working today on the Crypt. When the ride was lol...

EVERY projector in the Smiler indoor queue section. One was on, and abysmally "aligned" a good foot probably lower than it should. The music seemed quiet in there today and it had the lights on. Strobe was fine though... what a relief that was...

What happened? I recall it being red as a kid but not since, it used to look amaazing

Also what shutter door on Thi3teen? Ive been to towers a good 20 times this year and about 5 times last, always rode Thi3teen and never ever seen a shutter?
 
Thirteen's shutter has been working all weekend.

Nemesis blood has been implemented at the start of this season, but rarely used if ever since.

The projectors in The Smiler's queue line have been awful this weekend, particularly this evening where it was hugely unaligned.
