2016: Air - Re-theme to VR Coaster - Galactica

I wonder what the tagline is going to be if the name is Galactica?

"Prepare for Air" was good because it added a sense of anticipation; what are you preparing for? Above all though, it rhymed.

So, I propose "Get sciatica on Galactica". There's still the anticipation about how you'll get sciatica and it still rhymes!
 
The theme and concept of Air was fantastic it was just not completely realised.

Whatever they do it will almost certainly end up making it gimmicky and awful. It's Merlin for gods sake.

Please let's hope we keep the name the ride was conceived with and theme music at least.
 
The planning permission said that the reach and station will remain the same colour. Not saying it can't change, but at least it will still look like air.
 
Has anyone thought it might be called Air Galactica? (Has a nice wee ring to it) Like what they did with Sonic Spinball by keeping at least 'Spinball' in the title? Just a thought if they didn't really didn't have the nerve to give it a total makeover, if what Dark Forrest has taught us, Merlin seem to keep quite a fair bit of the original theme in it, or mostly just down to being cheep, which I could see with Air.
 
Feel free to shoot me down, but I saw a tweet this morning from Alton responding to someone asking if they had much maintenance planned over the winter as the park was looking tired, empty shops and vending machines... Alton's response was yes, and that the empty vending machines were due to a change of supplier.

So that basically means a return to Cadbury purple is sort of "spacey" OR over to Mars to bring in the likes of Mars bar, Milky Way, Galaxy bars which would fit nicely...

There is no doubt in my mind that there is some kind of sponsorship involved with the project - I really can't see Merlin spending the money on the project otherwise. Anyway, after hearing about the Galactica trademark, I've had a thought about how this could be somewhat tastefully tied into the existing aesthetic of the ride, and the wider "Alien" theme of the area.

"AIR : Galactica" could easily be an interspace airliner, with announcements and other things set up to make the whole thing very sci-fi airport (think Star Tours queueing area) . There could even be warnings of "hostile alien activity" related to the Nemesis monster. I would like to hope that the photo op could be used for something like an intergalactic passport or even boarding pass, with some nice alien writing and a general airline feel. You could then use the new preshow area to include a nice lighthearted safety video (preferably hosted by an alien air hostess) , again taking the opportunity to add some humour to the proceedings. Then of course, theme the tunnel.

This would very easily create something that feels new (space flight theme) while retaining and expanding on the bare bones of the current ride, with the whole thing potentially even laying the groundwork for SW8 to be some kind of other alien world to the one inhabited by Nemesis, and have the Air end of the valley as some kind of travel "hub" (at least thematically).

with Foodloop being added in , this could also very easily be themed to be a kind of Alien canteen , or even a departure lounge, again adding to the interplanetary theme.

Was really really sad this weekend to have my final ride on Air. I really dont want it changed, improved yes, but not changed. The name, the blue lights, the music, the Prepare for Air, and the memories I have on this ride over the years, I really am gutted they are going to change it.

I think VR and space theme is going to ruin it.
 
Did anyone notice the flashing multicoloured lights at the end of the Air tunnel? Never seen them before and they seemed awfully random.
 
It was flashing red, amber, green when I was on it Saturday. and thought it was a clearance to fly light theme

I noticed this on my first ride yesterday morning. I suspect it was an errand DMX signal (I can't imagine they are DMX controlled though) or a dipswitch on the light had somehow changed putting it into a standard type RGB cycling mode.
