Taking Bags on Water Rides

i mentioned this in one of the other topics, but thought I'd start it's own topic. here is what i said:

"i went to Blackpool PB last week and had to take my rucksack on Valhalla (again, i wasn't allowed to leave it on the platform, even though it's a very wet ride). i held it between my legs, high out of the water, but i noticed it on the floor when we exited the boat- i think it fell from between my legs after one of the big drops. it got very wet:(. they really ought to have a baggage store before the station, or a baggage rack on the platform. i couldn't leave it with anyone, as i was with just one other person, and we both went on the ride."

what do you think? discuss.

Thats not good suprised health & safety are not on to it tbh.Maybe u can stuff it in yer coat and zip it up or are there any lockers u can put yer stuff in a bppb?i havnt been for years!

It seems most water rides make you take your items on the ride with you. All Rapids and log flumes I have ever been on it have made you take your bag with you. I assume the reason is because they have such high throughputs if you left your bags on the side or they had cages there would be so many bags there it would take too much room up.

Best thing to do is use a locker if you don't want your items to be wet.

It largely depends on the ride, on rapids rides with turntables there's no option of leaving bags as there's no storage space at all. In theory something like Valhalla could have bag storage on the exit platform, as there's plenty of space due to the fact that the ride runs far fewer boats than it was designed for, plus the lower capacity boats they're using now.

yes, there are lockers, inside the park, where the Park Entrance is.

i know that some types of River Rapids boats have a space in the centre of the wheel for bags, and a cover that goes over it.

I remember almost making the mistake of leaving my bag in the middle of Djengu River. Curse those types of boats.

Another problem with leaving bags in water ride stations is security - on a coaster there'll usually only be 1-3 trains so you can have 1 bag cage per train, with water rides that's not practical so it's much harder to stop anyone taking someone else' bag.

Space is also a practical concern. A log flume with 15-20 boats of 5 people means you could end up with nearly 100 bags on the station at a time!

Or be a complete skinflint and take a bin bag to stick you rucksack in.
I take a couple of big black bin bags as you never know how useful they are. i have use them as covers for wet seats after rain, a make shift waterproof coat, and a rucksack cover.

Not so bad when they're running 6 or 8 boats as they often do now, but imagine when they were running 25 boats in the early days - having a bunch of people wandering around looking for bags and the like next to open water is a terrible plan.

Stick it in a locker, don't take a bag - take your pick, why people need a bag is beyond me. It's asking for trouble having loads of people wandering around, leaving their bags unattended is dangerous - particuarly these days where the value of somebody's bag is is the hundreds of pounds.

Even I don't take bags anywhere when I don't have to as I'm paranoid about stuff getting nicked.
There are lockers at bpb but they're not cheap and once you open them they can't be locked again meaning you have to pay for another one if you just wanted to nip and get something out of your bag.

BPB have lockers by the park entrance with an all day option for £3.50.

I've always taken a bag with waterproofs (for Valhalla), snacks and a drink (to keep costs down). Not the end of the world if it's lost/stolen and I never put anything even vaguely valuable in there

This thread didn't seem to relate to Alton Towers so I have moved it Rest of the World Parks and Attractions, the place for more generic theme park discussion.

:)

I've left a bag outside the queue but she prefers it I don't call her that ;)

I get the point about not leaving stuff on the side due to throughput, limited space, etc... but I am sure if it was a big enough issue they could build a storage hut just outside the queue and trade your bag for wristbands. Unfortunately I guess you have done all you can do with the feedback form.

It amazes me how Merlin proceed with the whole baggage area things. People often point the finger at them in terms of how they like to penny pinch (that's not me agreeing... by the way) but one thing you can't say they are shy to spend on is staffing. Those baggage hold/claim areas cost a small fortune to staff.

Nothing compared to Galactica though, of course :)
