M&D's Incident June 2016

According to the Daily Record (rag, I know), it did land on the kiddie's ride. But jeez, that wheel - if that's where it landed (assuming it hasn't been moved), imagine if it'd hit someone?!

Pretty unbelievable that this type of accident can even happen in the UK in the wake of The Smiler accident.

There can be no screams of "human error" here... If the train was able to derail, the ride was not fit to be in operation. The park are fully liable and the future surely looks bleak for M&Ds. If there even is a future.

This accident is, at least from a technical perspective, far worse than what happened with The Smiler. Let's hope the injuries are not comparable.

The most dangerous outcome is this shows it is possible for rollercoasters to be unsafe. Tsunami clearly was.

Things like this shouldn't happen, this isn't a tragic 'honest' mistake like Smiler, the number of people associated with maintaining these rides, checking and checking the checks makes this as baffling as it is tragic.

thoughts are with all those involved. I think insuring a theme park will shoot up in price now. This is not good.

That photo on the Sky News link...I don't think I can see any emergency services. Do you think it's landed that way?!

ETA: the first photo I mean, where it looks upside down on top of the kiddies ride?
this shows that the emergency services are currently at the scene:

I was not too surprised when I heard that a roller coaster had crashed at M&D's but I was surprised to discover it was Tsunami which is by far the most competently engineered coaster there in terms of ride quality.

Those photos are very dramatic. It looks like it derailed in the rollover inversion which is the second highest point of the track. I hope the injuries sustained don't become any worse than reported. It would be a minor miracle if so.

The only other time I've seen a derailment that severe is Cobra at Tivoli Friheden which is another small invert built by a cheap Italian manufacturer.

First instinct is that this is a metal fatigue issue which would explain why the wheel sets sheared off like that. It's the sort of thing that really should be picked up in routine checks. Of course we'll need to wait a while to know for sure.

In any case, this is exactly what the UK amusement industry didn't need.

This looks nasty, hope there are no fatalities.

Like said this will be another blow to the UK industry, and won't help Towers recover any quicker either.

As if an entire train has derailed... that just doesn't happen.... it's almost RCT like with how the train is just piled up on the floor!

Without a fireball, one assumes.

I seem to recall the coin-op ride being across the pathway from where it appears to be in the photos, near their Big Apple.

I wasn't there today but M&Ds is my local park so confirming some things I know about it.

Tsunami is an Pinfari Invented coaster popular with young teens. Tsunami got stuck in 2011 due a mechanical failure. Today it seems to have fell off at its first drop seen here.

And yes it sadly fell on top of a children's coin operated bike ride though not sure if anyone was on them at the time. It was also raining hard today though I doubt it was a issue, perhaps stopped more people be outside.

I don't like the park personally, the coasters have been so rough for me. But to hear that a major malfunction or structure failure has happened on a rollercoaster is heartbreaking. I really hope there are no deaths but so far 7 people confirmed injured.

Thanks for this Tygra, I was wondering if the weather would have an affect. I'm in Stirling and it's been miserable here today but wasn't sure what it was like through there (although I did see some people in ponchos in those pics). I'm hoping that by the fact we haven't specifically heard anything about anyone being injured on the kid's ride that there was no one on it at the time.

Looks bad, hope we don't get any fatalities or life changing injuries. Wasn't too shocked that it happened at M&D's. Never been but not one of their coasters look particularly safe. Would've been horrendous to be on or watch (doesn't everyone have that nightmare initially on both inverts and wild mice that you will derail)

Not saying that this isn't bad or anything, but I suppose this isn't the worst time for an incident. Most of the media has been non-stop reporting on the EU referendum (I don't think I've heard about anything different since thursday), and I doubt such a minor park will get much coverage. I'm just worried what two rollercoaster accidents just 12 months apart will do to the publics perspective of rollercoasters. This isn't going to be good for M&D's though, shame it's the biggest park in Scotland.

Update Nine children and two adults in hospital. Only 10 people can go on the ride at a time so must have been injures on the ground as well.
Many are also saying the ride was closed for a few days and was being worked on.

Jesus Christ this is awful to hear. Those images are really distressing. Thoughts go out to everyone affected :(
