The Family Guy Topic

When someones in court and having a battle, a cool aid jug smashes through the window and yells "Oh Yeah!" You cant help but chuckle or laugh at that.

I can very easily not laugh at that, as I do for every other episode of probably the show I most detest on TV now. Both The Simpsons and South Park are way, way bigger than this show ever will be, not to mention that they don't depend on "flashbacks" for gags in probably every single episode. I didn't used to like South Park until recently when I saw some of the newer episodes on comedy central, and now watch it quite often when it's on. As for Family Guy I honestly thought it was some sort of self parody of American TV in general, then realised it is actually trying to be serious. I'd sooner watch Liverpool FC TV than an episode of family guy.

Just my views on the show. :)

I struggle to find myself enjoying Family Guy, the most I laugh is when I'm severely cringing at the awful material in there and, yes I get that it's not meant to be taken seriously as it is a comedy but, honestly I don't see how it is so funny as people make it out to be. This just comes from somebody who has sat through almost an entire series without stop alongside having an old friend who wouldn't stop singing about "Bird Is The Word", "Rock Lobster" and doing the Peter Griffin laugh. There are good moments that have made me think 'Maybe this isn't so bad' but they have been so few and far between for me to think any better of Family Guy.

I do however hold respect to Seth MacFarlane as an animator for his work on several Hanna-Barbera shows for Cartoon Network (Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Laboratory being two of them). And I guess the Blue Harvest films get away with my approval too since I'm not fond of Star Wars and he pretty much dissected the saga enough to kick George Lucas' bum.

I think the Bird Is The Word thing is enough to get MacFarlane tried for crimes against humanity, personally.

Remember a few years ago, when there was a big movement to get John Cage's silent work 4′33″ to Christmas number one as an surrealist prank?

And it failed because a load of Family Guy fans launched a rival campaign to get bloody Bird Is The Word to number one, thus ruining the one potentially successful situationist stunt for decades. :p

I will not lie, The Simpsons is bigger, but its a classic that dates back a long time ago. We cannot argue with that.

But i'd have to bite with South Park.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

"Shortly after the third season of Family Guy aired in 2001, Fox canceled the series. However, favorable DVD sales and high ratings for syndicated reruns on Adult Swim convinced the network to renew the show in 2004"

Looking at wikipedia, Family Guy has had more viewers overall. Also, Family Guy airs in 27 countries. Back in 1998 South Park had big reviews, but over the past few years the show has been in a downfall and has failed to even get close to its popular seasons when it first aired.

So I dont think its "Bigger" Than Family Guy.

It may have high viewing figures, but One Direction's first album sold better in America than The Beatles'. I think we can all agree The Beatles were a far superior band. Think of South Park as The Beatles and Family Guy as One Direction.

I hate to make an off-topic digression, but that statistic may be because the population of the US was 179,323,175 in 1960 and is 308,745,538 now, not because of actual popularity. :p

Shush, Sam, I'm trying to help our argument. ;)

:p

It doesn't really matter Blaze, popularity is completely unrelated to quality.

Popularity is a completely useless judge if you're comparing how good each show is. The Daily Mail and The Sun are the most popular newspapers in Britain, remember.

As much as I love Family Guy, South Park and The Simpsons in my personal oppinion they're all starting to pass their peak, *even with Family Guy Seth Mcfarlane admits that in his personal oppinion the show should have ended after series 7. I suppose as long as the shows respective networks are still making money from theses well known brands/shows they won't cancell them, there just keep going untill they run the shows into the ground to the point people turn off and the networks loose ratings and money.

Quick fact: Family Guy is the only american tv show that uses an orchestra to record all the shows music.

Wow! Didnt know that! ;)

I'm not a big Family Guy fan.

The Simpsons, South Park and King of the Hill are much funnier and just more clever than FG. It does have its moments but I don't go out of my way to watch it and oftentimes will switch over or switch the TV off if it is on. With any of the other shows I mentioned, I'd be much more likely to sit there and watch it - even if there was something else I should be doing or was in the middle of doing.

I don't think "It's a cartoon" is a good enough reason to say it's alright to have low-grade humour receive so much airtime, either, nowadays since there are so many clever and witty shows out there that are animated as well.

American Dad isn't so bad. I much prefer it to Family Guy. Roger the Alien makes me laugh quite a lot, to be fair. I saw an episode yesterday that was to do with The Rapture and Armageddon that was pretty funny.

The best quote I saw regarding Ted, was that it was "subversion for an audience deeply afraid of such a thing", and that's pretty much how I feel about all of McFarlane's work, aside from American Dad, which often succeeds as it has at least some satirical intent, rather than just a series of controversy baiting cutaways.

I saw the South Park about psychics last night, and it made me realise just how far ahead South Park is. Sometimes I think "imagine if Family Guy did this", but with episodes like the John Edwards one, Family Guy wouldn't even be able to pull it off.

I've come to realise something similar to that review of Ted. South Park is controversial because it's fearless. Family Guy is controversial because it wants to be.
