TS York Bank Holiday Weekend: 29th April - 1st May 2017

Apart from the NRM, I'd quite like to visit the bunker. Then there's Eden Camp. And Jorvik as well.... Since we'll be there friday night as well, I think we may have to head up early and do some things that afternoon. I take it a few people will want to do the NRM and Jorvik at least?

I'd imagine that's what we'll be doing on Sunday.

Speaking of Jorvik, I've noticed that if you book in advance then you'll need to have a specific time to visit. Also, one time slot on the Sunday is already sold out. If it's something everyone wants to do, then maybe we should discuss a time and book tickets in advance?

If we're making requests, I'd like to put forward the House of Trembling Madness. It's a medieval ale house complete with ancient oak beams and a great view of the Minster. It's basically what you imagine when you think of a medieval pub.

It has a large range of fancy craft ales available and they've won awards for their food. It is, however tiny so there may well not be room for us.

You had me at "ale". :D

EDIT: RE Jorvik, that's the place I'd put lowest on my priority list. It's likely to be heavingly busy that weekend anyway.

It's a great looking pub, loads of mounted animal heads on the wall too!

I wanna do as many old-timey pubs as possible! They're also much more reasonably priced than in London!
 
If possible I would really like to do Jorvik as I've never been to York before. Do we have any idea what the schedule is for Sunday? Or what time we are meeting up on Sunday? As i could book a slot and meet up with everyone else later

We aren't going to say that X, Y or Z is happening on the Sunday, as York has so many attractions that people will want to do specific things.

For example I do wish to go to the Jorvik Centre - but I am sure others would rather visit the NRM. I also wish to just wander the city, and visit York Minster. I may also wish to have an hour or so to myself to just wander.

I don't plan on booking anything until nearer the time, though.
 
the attractions are quite close together, so you could do more than one if you have time.
i also recommend walking along the City Walls (keep away from the edge, though!).
 
Don't forget there's the steam train just up the road from Flamingo Land, in Pickering, if people fancy even more train geekery!

Ok coolio I'm sure some other people will want to go. So I'll wait and arrange something nearer the time with those who do want to go .

By the sounds of it there's loads to do and see. So I'll probably have to arrange to go back to York again.

I've only been there once, and it was quite a long time ago now, but I remember the quality of the actors being far higher than London, Blackpool or Amsterdam. Of course, That's the kind of thing that can vary hugely on a day to day basis...
 
Not going to lock me up for being a proud Yorkshireman like the Blackpool one did are they now. Much better taste :p

Does anybody have space in accommodation for this meet? Despite the warnings, I didn't book anything. I've just noticed that this is the weekend just after my birthday (therefore I guess it's your birthday @AstroDan ?) It seems like a good way to celebrate my birthday.

I went to York a few days ago,(in half term). The main reason was the recently re-opened Jorvik Viking Centre, which is a lot better.
Review of Jorvik:

There are now two queues outside, one for general admission and one for those with advance tickets. When you go down the stairs from the Admissions area, the displays and information on the walls have now gone and have been replaced with screens which show various short films about various Viking topics. The film lasts a few minutes and changes every time.
Moving onto the ride section, the cars are brand new. They look almost exactly the same as the old one, but have six LED touch screens (three per row), which allows for a wider language selection (riders select their preferred language on the screen), and during the ride the screens display various objects, and the voice over is also different (male voice now). Some of the animatronic models have been replaced with new ones. The section after the ride is mostly the same; there are various display cases with Viking-age artefacts. Overall, it is a lot better than it used to be.

NOTE: I recommend booking in advance (i did); the queue can get massive, especially in half terms/weekends/hollidays (you have to choose a time-slot).

I also reccomend visiting the National Rail Museum and walking along the City Walls.
