Anything Radioactive Topic

Just how close are you right now to a nuclear weapon...?
(Hint: not nearly as close as you would have been 25 years ago when they were dispersed to pretty much every US air base in the world).

The framing of the shot of the bomb hitting Sheffield in Threads has been destroyed now with new buildings, glad I got the pics when I did from the Moor

There was an interesting documentary on the new arch going over Chernobyl to protect it on BBC 4 a few days ago, might still be on iplayer... It had some interesting history about the place.

Very interesting documentary. I was at Chernobyl last month whilst the arch was moving into place. It was so surreal seeing it all in real life whilst my dosimeters alarm was going off. Here's a few pictures

Was wondering when you'd post that in here, @Dan. :p

In other news, there's been a couple of articles on Nuclear Secrecy lately about "can Trump just nuke anywhere he likes?" Tuns out the answer is... YES! The way the security around the bomb is set up in the USA, the president, and ONLY the president can authorise the use of nuclear weapons. No one can override him, either. And of course, the grunts who actually press the button(s) have been brainwashed to never question orders...

I had this idea a while ago. Lego design for a Titan II ICBM. Thought I'd share.

And being a Trek geek, I couldn't help but do The Phoenix from First Contact as well, given it was launched on a Titan. (The cockpit glass will be the printed piece used in the Millennium Falcon sets).

Might even get round to building it one of these days. :p

I'm going to Tokyo in a few weeks so I might take some before and after readings. Any recommendations on a cheap counter?

Any recommendations on a cheap counter?
My one doesn't seem to be available at the moment, but there is a solar rechargable version on the site this thread was named after. :) Bear in mind this model (like mine) only tells you the raw particle count per minute, not dose over time, which is the important thing. Other geiger counters and dosimeters are available on that site, depending on your budget.

Pah, propaganda.

Come back & worry when the radiation gets out of the containment area. Especially given the new 'Ice barrier.'

Thanks :D I remember reading the thread when you ordered yours and your subsequent excitement of measuring everything :) I've been scraping the pennies for the trip and hopefully the meet at York so £125 might be a little too far for me. Despite the bad reviews I'm thinking about one of the ones you plug into your phone. Its a lot cheaper and I might be able to take readings in Japan for better comparison. It won' be the most accurate experiment but it might yield interesting results depending on the accuracy of the adaptor.

Just waved the works geiger over myself. Happy to say i am the same as local background. #NotGlowInTheDark
