Parkitect - New Rollercoaster game

Just seen this via Screamscape. Here is a new rollercoaster game in the making and is asking for backers currently on Kickstarter. It is called Parkitect and is looking to be released by August/September 2015. Here is a link to the Kickstarter page:

Now this game graphically looks very simplistic/cartoony like the old Rollercoaster Tycoon games, and looks very similar to Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. It seems it will be pretty similar in nature to the RCT series in how it will play too. For $15 backing you can get a copy of the game when it comes out. Here are a few screens:

Personally for me this is to simplistic and doesn't push the boundary further than what RCT 2 did and that game is now 12 years old. If this was a game for mobiles then I may accept it but due to it being a full PC game I can't see much advancement. It seems at the minute we are inundated with Rollercoaster games software; Rollercoaster Tycoon World, Theme Park Studio, NoLimits 2, ScreamRide (Xbox) and now this. Personally I can see this game coming under RCTW, TPS and NL2 with it only being better than ScreamRide. I think this game should be what RCTW will become next year.

I wish the game all the best but for me this isn't to much of an advancement/improvement on what RCT 2 was so I will not be backing it. Maybe I will change my mind about it once it gets further into development but at the minute, no. Although I wish all the best to the three blokes that are advancing with it.

What are your thoughts?

Looks very simple, I'm hoping it is for tablets. Wouldn't really class NL2 as a game though.......

It looks OK. Although there seems to be nothing that unique about it. Just looks like RCT2 polished.

With RCT4 coming up, NL already being available and Theme Park Studio slowly being released in its full I think all sections of roller coaster games are pretty well covered at the moment and there's no gap for something that's just more of the same thing.

Looks very dated. I wish them well, but that seems extremely old and for 15 quid?!

I mean I haven't even bought the new proper ones, I don't think I'd have the patience to learn the complexities of it - but there seems to be the whole range of games/simulators/design tools already available? Or am I imagining that.

Anyway, good luck lads but not for me.

OK maybe game was the wrong word to use. It still covers Rollercoasters so maybe I should of said rollercoaster software. As others have stated, the rollercoaster bases are covered quiet well and I just fail to see where this will fit in. In a way I see it will become a poor version of Rollercoaster Tycoon World when that comes out next year (only going off the recent articles and pictures released of RCTW).

$15 dollars, which is about £9.20.

If it was 99p on an App Store then fair enough, but not near enough a tenner. Sod that. I do like the name though.

I think we've underestimated this game.

While to look at it seems to be no more than a newer version of RCT1 or 2 from reading the developers blog it's actually a lot more than that.

Here are some of the features that really peaked my interest:
- Shops and Restaurants need to be restocked. To do so you have roaming staff that need access to the unit, meaning there is a need for back of house areas to deliver them unseen.
- Staff are supposed to have needs similar to guests. Treat them poorly, underpay them ect. and they will leave. They also have a "behaviour tree" so they act appropriately.
- Likewise guests should behave more realistically, not trooping half way across the park to use a toilet identical to the one they were standing next too (anyone that's built a big park in RCT3 will know this system needed a lot of improving)
- The coaster creator: Not as revolutionary as other games but is the natural progression from the old RCTs. It keeps the simplicity of grid based building but lets you add banking wherever you want and elements in whatever sizes you want. Plus it comes with a basic force measuring feature.

You can access the developers blog here:

I've only just started reading it so I'm sure there's plenty that I've missed.

Conclusion:
If you are looking for the next Theme Park "Management" game this might be worth keeping an eye on. If you are looking for something to build a dream park like the ones in the RCT forum you won't be able to do it, but as a game that simulates what it's actually like to run a theme park I think this could be great!

After seeing this... Colour me excited! The management side was always more fun to me!

Surprisingly so am I. It's weird because those that have seen my RCT3 stuff know I go for heavily detailed experiences... but it always worked! If I couldn't play the game and let a real Theme Park situation play out it didn't interest me.

As Roller Coaster Tycoon World seems to have gone quiet since the developer changed (a website went up for it today but all the info is months out of date) and Coaster Park Tycoon is still way off I can see myself playing this as a game but keeping hold of RCT3 for design purposes*

* for the record I do have something very exciting in the works for RCT3

The game has entered pre-pre-alpha for those that backed it with over £100.

and we have a game play video:

While it's obviously still in development you can see a few of the features I mentioned above like the shops restocking and the improved grid based coaster creator.

Is it bad I still want some of your unreleased RCT3 stuff? ^

Anyway, this game is utterly cute. It's like the creator got animal crossing and RCT2 and forced them to have a baby. If it's a reasonable price I'll definitely buy this, as it seems to be the only one of the 4 larger RC sims (TPS, RCTW and CPT) I've been following to have really good community feedback and tons of in game shots rather then just renders of restuarants which were meant to be dark ride stations.

Parkitect is now in Pre-Alpha and available to those who've donated. I've been playing it this afternoon and so far it seems really fun. Like the original RCT games but brought up to modern standards.

The bit that really interests me (although it hasn't been implemented yet) is the staff. They all have proper needs and wants just like the guests suggesting they will need to take breaks, lunch and vary there activities. There's already a special staff path in the game which hints this to be the case. As someone who has worked in one of these front-line roles I really want to see where they go with it.

Fun Little Game, Like the early RCT with a modern UI and full 360 degree camera.

Staff appear to deliver stock from the entrance to the shops, so the staff walk ways will be interesting.

Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Ian

Really enjoying this game. Regular updates from the developers, once the main game is out with a campaign/scenarios I think it will be a great package.

I really want a working coaster cam, until that happens I just can't seem to get the same enjoyment out of it as I have with other coaster sims. I'm not expecting No limits/Planet Coaster style recreations but half the fun is making an almost impossible coaster and getting to test it yourself. I have installed a few different mods but none of them seem to work anymore, the only mod I did have working was a wing coaster train which has now been removed. :(

Is there light at the end of the tunnel for this release or is it destined to be in alpha forever?

I don't know if you follow their devlogs but they are quite proactive in keeping everyone up to date with what they're working on. I've also seen them respond to comments from users quite often so might be worth asking them.
For me, I enjoy the scenery side of things more and the art style of the game allows for some cool looking detailed areas.
Some nice little touches in the game as well, they recently added a Splash Battle which works really well with the guests shooting water at each other, at guests on nearby paths and also you can place little targets on the scenery you've installed around the splash battle for them to shoot at. Great moment when I saw an unsuspecting mechanic stroll down the exit path and get water sprayed at him by a passing boat.
