Aren't you forgetting Thirteen?
Dark Forest was very much an afterthought and they rushed on the idea of blending UG Land in with Th13teen. Hence why all that happened was existing buildings given a lick of green paint and cheap fake vines plastered all over the place (half of which were removed in 2011/12).

The conversation about which themed are this will be in is an odd one, because the entrance (and the ride itself) is in Mutiny Bay, but the theme seems more suited to Katanga and the park said it would be in Gloomy Wood, although this could have been a red herring.

Having just returned to the forum after a sabbatical but still following SW8 teasers I was convinced that SW8 was going to be in Katanga canyon but having seen the photo which shows an apparent entrance in munity bay I am baffled and can't see it working in mutiny bay at all

What I find more interesting is that this ride does seem to have created a new path linking it and Gloomy Woods. If you look at an aerial picture of the station there appears to be a T-Junction in the path just after the Katanga Canyon sign. The left side follows the old route but the right is new. The path passes alongside SW8’s break run, under the lift hill and connects to the new acces path they created last year.

If this is a usable path next year it’ll have some great views of the ride and provide a really useful shortcut to Gloomy Woods and the Valley.

Edit:
You can see the path on the plans but it doesn’t say if it’s going to be opened or just for access.

There has always been a staff access path in that area but it had to be removed during construction.

True, but before It was more like a tarmac road to nowhere. Now that its a proper path and loops around the new coaster I wonder if it'll remain closed or open as a shortcut to Gloomy Wood. I feel like if It did it would really benefit Duel, being at the crossroad of 4 paths.

I also notice the new path from last year is not on the plans. I assume it will still exist but will be closed to staff only.

Yes, that will probably be closed, as it is a staff only path but they opened it publically last year as the construction site took up part of the public path. Now that the main path is back open, that path will probably revert back to staff-only use (hence it not being on the plans).

but the theme seems more suited to Katanga

The theme doesn't seem suited to Katanga at all. Katanga is a jungle or wild west type theme (Congo Rapids or a Mine Train). SW8 is very English woods and actually Dark Forest would be the closest themed area. But it isn't that out of place in Mutiny Bay, certainly better than the duck Flume was. It could sort of be said that if you walk from Mutiny Bay you enter the woods where the Beornen are, just beyond the bay.

If you do not want to visit Alton Towers at Scarefest, Fireworks, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in August or 1st/2nd September then you can get a Season Pass for £55.

I assume this does not include car parking.

The Alton Towers Annual Pass is no more!

What a joke, I'll likely not be renewing once my current AT annual pass expires in April. Glad I got a BPB pass when they were cheap.

Pretty good value even with the blackout dates and a visit to Scarefest and fireworks. Will be interesting to see how popular it proves with folk on this site and with the public in general.

I don't understand this decision. Surely an annual pass makes more sense?

I believe this decision has come from Merlin; no doubt this is to push MAP sales even more yet encourage people with zero interest in any form of annual pass to consider a Towers Season Pass.

:)

I agree it's a decent idea, it just sucks that it replaced the proper annual pass.

They already have loads more midweek close dates this season and now they're telling you that unless you buy a premium merlin pass you can't visit on summer weekends or for practically the entire last month of the season.

But basically the season pass pays for itself in three visits (compared with using a 2for1 or online booking)! How many people who are seriously interested in an AT season pass would really want to go on a busy summer weekend anyway, just go in June/July weekend instead. If you then want scarefest & fireworks then book online and you still have unlimited visits for most of the year, plus one scarefest and one fireworks for £121.

With the price being the same as on the gate price this is obviously a marketing trick to bolster attendance for the year.

Someone who turns up on the day sees a sign for season pass being the same price as on the gate will 100% buy the season pass instead and then to get value will make return visits and possibly next year then upgrade to the MAP pass instead.

Win win for Merlin

And the AT annual pass renewal price was £100. Plus you got parking, Waterpark discount and 20% off F&B and merch with that.

Some people who work during the week have to visit at weekends you know.

It's just another decrease in offering from Merlin, but what else should we expect?

Such a shame to see the parks going this way, there are people working there who really do care.
