TS Alton Towers (Smokehouse) Sizzler: Opening Weekend 2018

Meeting times:
Saturday 17th March 2018: 8:50am outside Splash Landings Hotel PROMPT DUE TO NEW RIDE
Sunday 18th March 2018: 10:30am outside the Box Office on Towers Street
Accommodation: Rugeley Travelodge or Alton Towers Resort

Light snow up until 12? This will have a very minimal impact; the park has been open in far worse circumstances. Business as usual, but just a chilly first ride on Wicker Man.

I hate to be the breara of bad news but https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gcqtmjbrh#?date=2018-03-13 looking at the met office it supposed to snow on Saturday is there plans to rearrange the meet if this happens should we cancel booking etc

The meet will be going ahead regardless of weather. We've actually had some meets (Feb Half Term usually) which features snow, and they've been fine. At present, this is looking like just a few morning showers then it should be dry. Don't panic :)

The snow does not look problematic at all. The temperature not getting above 2C however does, it could be hard to get some of the coasters open with it being that cold. Here's hoping the forecast takes a turn for the better before the weekend.

:)

No worries i will monitor it closely 200 miles and couple hundred pounds when a lot of rides could be shut registers as madness to me

Long time no post - unless the weather's really bad, I shall make a token appearance on the Sunday - may well be my only trip to the Towers this year.

Ok so its snowing throughout the night minus 4 during the day and possibly more snow. thorpe park is not opening and alton towers refuse to answer anybody whether they will be open as normal with all the rides open. so I'm asking will the park definitely be open with rides and if it is i will see you there

Thorpe have only mentioned they may have to close so far (although it's likely) with a decision still due to be made. They need to be 100% sure if they're going to call anything at all. There's a massive cost involved, a lot of work needed in terms of contacting people, not to mention there'll be an even bigger flood of people asking questions if and when any decision is made.

I understand all that craig. im just kind of relying on the enthusiasts here as it is a very long journey and I need to be leaving in a few hours 2-3 pm waking up tomorrow in Staffordshire to find everything shut would be quite disastrous

We really don't know much more than anyone else. All I can say is that Alton Towers will be monitoring the situation throughout the day and I can only imagine they will want to make a call by early afternoon. As it stands they are saying that everything is scheduled to open as normal. To be totally honest, if the Met Office forecast is correct then I expect the theme park to be closed all weekend. But please do not take my word for it!

:)

Well TLC did say they were prepared to delay opening by 1 week :D

Thorpe have cancelled their AP event on Sunday.
The forecast for KT16 is only slightly worse than it is for ST10; however, Alton have a lot more riding on the weekend than Thorpe do, so would have more to lose. There's literally nothing about in other than social media pages. I wouldn't worry about it tbh. My guess would be that Thorpe aren't properly ready to open and this was an excellent excuse to stall for time.

Here at Alton Towers Resort, we can’t wait to welcome guests for the 2018 Theme Park Season.

We intend to open the theme park as planned this weekend, and our hotels are fully open as normal. However, the worsening weather forecast over the last 24 hours – with below zero temperatures, snow and high winds now forecast – mean it’s looking unlikely we’ll be able to operate our rollercoasters this weekend, including Wicker Man, our new thrill attraction. We are currently expecting to open CBeebies Land, Mutiny Bay and Sharkbait Reef by SEA LIFE as usual.

Looks like all the roller coasters are closed guys

Can we rename this the not opening weekend meet?

I might turn up tomorrow, depends on how the roads are. Can't really do Sunday so won't be there unless the weather first thing is OK in which case I'll pop in for an hour or so.

Dan, do you know something that we don't regarding the possible opening of rides like Wickerman, or are you just happy to have the meet with no coasters open? Not a trick question :)
