To be fair, most rides in Alton have a warning at the entrance saying no mobile phones or video to be used on the ride. The Rapids says take them on at your own risk. If you cannot use them on the Rapids, then the signage should be consistent throughout the park on the rides.

At the end of the day, Shawn has a vast majority of young and impressionable viewers and I am worried those will take the on-ride footage at face value and feel that it is okay to film on a ride because Shawn did. If you were unaware of TPWW and saw the turnout for a TPWW event you would think it was a school trip.

I'm not even that fussed about him taking a photo on the rapids. However clearly rules have changed and he should have apologized.
I wonder why the Alton Towers social media team didn't have a go at former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland for these offences?

:)

It appears the only reason Towers replied was because they were tagged. Frankly, it's embarrassing for them as clearly the Oblivion and Smiler operators didn't notice the videos were being taken otherwise the ride would have been stopped/cameras confiscated.

I do think whoever tagged Towers in the first place and Pleasure Beach Experience should keep their nose out as right now it looks like they're trying to boost their own ego while bringing TPW down.

Or the operators were “star stuck” and decided to ignore it, remember that outrage after Olly Murs got to re-ride The Smiler without getting off.

I believe the no photography on the rapids came in after a risk assessment review in the wake of the Drayton Manor incident.
Which goes back to my point. If Alton Towers have changed their policy then they need to actually tell people.
Even without that it should be fairly obvious you shouldn't take photos on a ride know for hitting rocks with some force.
How so? I still don't see how that is inherently dangerous.

Not dangerous unless you count Moran's who will enter the ride area to retrieve phones that slipped out of their hands when they hit rocks.

Just on to point out, I have a friend who works at Towers, Rapids being one of the rides she works on, she’s currently visiting the park as a guest and has just filmed most of the Rapids on her snapchat...

My point being it is actually allowed on Rapids. It’s one of the few rides in the park what you can film on.

The social media team have clearly messed up on this one and then made themselves look even worse by being so petty and then messing up again.

I also spoke to another friend who used to be an operator on said ride he said the exact same thing. Filming and taking pictures is completely aloud but if your equipment gets damaged to park holds no responsibility.

Which again goes against the blanket ban Towers have in place. Contradiction city :D

CAN I FILM ON THE RIDES USING A GOPRO/OTHER FILMING EQUIPMENT?

Due to the safety of all our guests, we cannot allow anyone to film on our rides and attractions.

If that's what it says on the website then that ought to be the official stance, and the ride ops have it wrong.

The park needs to come out and clarify the rules. "Rides and attractions" IMO includes the monorail, skyride etc. Of course I would happily take photos while riding those and post them on the internet.

I However, some stupid, stupid people, I'm sure, would then try and grab the phone from the water, leaning over the side of the raft and potentially fall in, causing serious harm and/or death.
IMO If sombody is stupid enough to lean over the side of the raft and potentially fall in then thats there own fault!
I hate the blame/ clame culture and as long as we have this culture I will never sue anybody over anything in my life!

As for Shawn If what he says is true and the ride ops had no problem with it then why the hell should Shawn get all the blame!

I agree with you but unfortunately, the press would accuse ATR of running a death trap and at best, the ride wouldn't operate for quite some time. At worst, it would be permanently closed.

Look at Drayton... that accident was just a accident, caused by the riders decisions. One year on, the ride is still closed and has an uncertain future.

That's offensive to those poor workers who work so hard to keep the place safe though :(

Ok bear with me on this but

There are a LOT of dumb people out there thesedays, self entitled people who think that because they have a YouTube channel that they can ignore the rules because the extra hits get them money. Now, I am not aiming that comment at anyone in particular, and not at TPWW who generally do respect the rules, but, if Alton said:

"Its ok to film on some rides, but not others" - this would further confuse these people and end up with more and more of them filming on the rides.

Its easier for Alton to say a total blanket ban on any filming and photography on EVERY ride as its easier for these people to understand.

To give you an example of the dumb entitled people I am talking about here, this is someone on Twitter called Kat who posted in response to Shawn's photo :

Sorry Alton Towers as much as I love you if I want to vlog in your park and on the rides if I don't get caught I'm going to do it because Ive paid good money to come in, i want every penny to be worth it. I have vlogged on plenty of rides and nothing bad has happened

Just... no...

*So many inappropriate examples I can do with that argument template*

"I've paid good money to come into this _________. So I'm going to *INSERT RULE BREAK HERE* until I get caught"

*REDACTED JOKE*

I would be very suprised if the rule covers the Skyride. I always like to take photos of the excellent views when I ride it.

I have regularly taken pictures of my kids on Postman Pat and In The Night Garden.... does this put anyone in danger? No, there needs to be some level of common sense taken into account here. The rule on the rapids always used to be that cameras could be taken on and used at the guests risk, this may well have changed (as people say after the DM incident) but the signage at the ride entrance has not changed to reflect this so to attempt to embarrass and undermine a guest (and yes Shawn is a paying guest) based on a rule change that has not been publically made clear is a very petty move by the park and fellow enthusiasts.

At least one of the other enthusiast groups mentioned on here had quite a history of trying to argue and shame other groups, I thought they had moved past that but clearly not...shame.
