Ride Plans

Hey - a lot of you have been on various events etc and are 'in the know' - I am always fascinated about rides that never happened and concept art. Just thinking it would be a nice thread to have if we can have one showing concept are / discussing old plans. We all know about sw1 but I have never seen any concept art for instance. Also, there are bound to be images out there people have for rides we don't even know about. Just a though.....

See this for instance- I assume it's Smiler related

I know when Tussuads first brought Towers, they wanted to build a Self-Duelling (Like The Smiler today) Schwarzkof/Zierer mine train similar to Liseberanan and For SW6 their was a Zierer vertical launch coaster in concept art, So to me it is hard to believe Intamin Forest could of ended up as Zierer Forest(Vertical Luanch, Mine Train and Twirling Toadstool)

Hi guys. I wasn't sure where to put this, but I just wanted to ask if anyone knew anything about the original Alton Towers woodie plans for 2008? I can't actually find anything on the web about it, but I first heard about it when reading an old TowersTimes News article from late 2006/early 2007. I can find stuff about the planned cross-valley woodie for 2005, but nothing about this. Anything would be appreciated.

From memory I don't think too much came out regarding this, certainly not any plans. I remember rumours of Project Shark (which was to follow Project Dolphin, something else that never happened) and think it was set to be in the Coaster Corner area of the park.

Plans likely changed when Merlin bought Tussauds if they had not already.

:)

Sorry to bump this thread, but in many places, I've seen people say that SW7 was originally intended to be a different ride instead of The Smiler, and that The Smiler was quite a hastily drawn up project to replace something else that was originally planned. Is this true, and if it is, did any rumours ever come out about what SW7 was originally intended to be? I would be very interested to know.

I believe it was originally going to be a Halo IP. Not sure if was a different type of coaster though.

Ah right. Halo would certainly have been an... interesting fit in X-Sector from what I've heard about it. Thanks Diogo!

Was browsing through some old Alton Towers concept art when I came across some artwork of a steampunk themed area, Fort Discovery, which was once considered for Oblivion and the surrounding areas before the concrete themed X-Sector was chosen instead.

No doubt some of you guys will have seen them before, but thought I'd post them here anyway for anyone who hasn't, as they're very interesting to look at. :)

Makes you wonder how things would have evolved differently if this theme had actually been realised..

That looks really interesting, actually; one does have to wonder how the area would look today if this vision had been realised!

Love that concept art, was it not Port Discovery as opposed to Fort?

I suspect it wasn’t chosen due to its similarity to Discoveryland at DLP. Would love to have seen a steampunk area at AT. Often thought the monorail and stations could have been rethemed to a steampunk vibe.

Although it does look as though that's what it says in the first image, Merlin Magic Making featured the second image on their Instagram page a while ago, calling it Fort Discovery – so perhaps both names were considered?

I believe that the steampunk re-theme of the black hole was probably a little homage to this area which is kinda cool

Jesus, in concept at least, that looks utterly awesome! That would of fitted in so much better than X-sector, which in architectural terms is a little more brutalist and ugly. I second that James, it really does suit Alton Towers and its quirky olde worlde fantasy VIBES a lot better. X sector was still cool though, let's be thankful that still we had a great area.
