Slightly random but I’ve just seen this...

At least we now know Sub-Terra to be confirmed to not he returning in the 2019 season after all the speculation following project 42.

Hah! That was me that tweeted Towers about NST.

I knew fame would eventually find me.

Disappointing the ride isn’t reopening though. I suppose the only shred of hope is it’s reopening as Project 42 and therefore not NST? Doubtful though.

I would say a project 42 return is highly likely.
During scarefest only of course, it's now basically towers equalivant of SAW ALIVE.

Which I could, just about accept if they actually utislised the ride hardware within Project 42. But to have it sat there dormant and make a, fairy average attempt at a scare attraction is frankly ridiculous.

Until now I’d held out hope it would return and I could have forgiven Merlin for it being down for this long considering the mitigating circumstances, but now that average attractions like Dungeons are being made whilst it sits unused is very annoying.

Oh it's definitely annoying (as much as I hated the NST experience myself), the only reason they don't want to open it is lack of funding for it.

NST was poorly executed but an excellent idea, which sadly seems to be a Merlin trade mark with dark attractions as derren brown’s ghost train falls under a similar bracket.

With the prolonged closure of NST, they have an opportunity to admit mistakes internally and work on rectifying it. I stand by the point that it wouldn’t take much to make that an excellent ride. Install sole 3D technology and have the visuals sync with the physical effects, do something about that final stretch after you come up out of the lift, and at the very least you’ve got a horror version of a 4D experience. If they did that they wouldn’t even need the staffing which seems to be the issue with why it won’t reopen.

It concerns me that I can think of that but seemingly nobody internally can.

I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Wayne Burton have at some point pushed for a reopening with no success.

Wasn't the real reason for the initial closure (and why the ride hardware would not be used during scarefest) that ABC safety update meant changes to the restraint system had to be made, which left it uncomfortable or inaccessible to most full sized adults?
I seem to remember the work being done, it opening for a few weeks with all sorts of issues wedging people into it, then closing again forever?

I hear different versions of this, but I would imagine there is some truth to it.

Be that as it may, the solution isn’t to just leave it SBNO until they come up with a better idea. Either rectify the restraint issue, or accept that it’s unworkable and make something else in its place.

So as we know towers have been honest recently and said straight away that sub terra won't be returning. I messaged towers yesterday about staggered openings and they replied "opening times will be announced soon". What do you guys think about this? Do you think staggered openings will return?

Has anybody renewed their Merlin Annual Pass, and if so what does the 'privilege pack' look like this year? I think I've been fobbed off with the 2018 one

I bought my first one when they were offering the 15 months for 12. From what I gather it is the same as last year

Just seemed a bit odd to be promoting Chessington's "new" Tiger Rock, Thorpe Park's "Year of the Walking Dead" and vouchers with blackout dates in 2018...

But they must have got a workable restraint system at the London Dungeon. Just implement the same system!

There was a few changes to the restraints, I did it only a week or two before it closed and it had the modified restraints which look the same as those at the London dungeon, they actually make the ride far worse than before, as you are literally stapled in, more of a torture device than anything else!

No idea if towers sorted issues it had, or if it just needed more money spending and towers simply didn’t have or want to spend it on an attraction which wasn’t popular.

So instead they just left it to rot?

I can’t say I’ve had a problem with the London dungeon restraint system tbh.

Either way it’s a moot point as it clearly won’t be reopening now. Hopefully it gets removed soon as having it there SBNO (and listed on the parks website) is embarrassing to be honest.

I’ve said this before but they could make a Jurassic park esque water ride with a similar theme to NST, with the enemy being the Nemesis Aliens, rather than dinosaurs. Not that it will happen though, sadly.

Probably that they haven’t decided yet. They will still be working through the budget allocated and how far it will stretch.

Yup, Alton Towers have released their 2019 opening times....
