Thorpe Park: General Discussion

I found the 8pm closures a bit random really, and I’ve not seen them advertised anywhere. At least with love island lates there was a purpose to it. This just seems to be closing the park late when it’s probably not needed.

They need something to keep people on the park later, like something at the end of day, or to advertise it more. Probably be better to extend till 7pm over more days than 8pm.

That’s actually really poor, usually the hours and calendar is one thing you know won’t change for the worse at Merlin parks once they’ve been published.

Given this was the parks anniversary year if they can’t even pull people in for that then things are bad (not that we didn’t know that already)

Without events on the late nights it is pointless although you could say the writing was on the wall when they dropped it from 10pm to 8pm.

Damn. Was looking forward to late closing on Thursday. I have a merlin pass, but it must be annoying for people who have pre booked tickets thinking the park would be open til 8 to find out they are closing two hours earlier with only 2 days notice

This has been an issue since the original Summer Nights started, as they've ALWAYS been dead... One wonders if there's any actual appetite for it from the GP apart from in Halloween season...

Pretty much agree, it was great for the evening rides though. I did notice it got busy in the latter part of August right up til the 10pm closes last year. Whether that correlates with people returning from their holidays Im not sure.

Rather than cancelling most 8pm closes id rather they got rid of that bouncy castle!

I have long argued this... it seems to be in the DNA of the British public that theme parks are almost exclusively a 9 - 5 activity. Unless there is a compelling reason to be there outside of these times - fireworks, spooky stuff or illuminations, it just doesn't seem to appeal.

I think conditioned makes it sound more sinister than it really is.

It's cultural, in the same way a lot of locals targeted parks in Spain don't open before midday.

The park should’ve have stayed open til 8 yesterday, the park was rammed. Some people were still under the impression it was open til 8 and were still trying to join closed queuelines.
This wasn’t helped by the fact the app and the little clocks outside rides showed 8 til about 7pm.

If it was cultural then they wouldn’t have been a feature in the 80’s and 90’s. 8pm close was a regular feature at Towers.

I think it’s mostly because the parks have set the standard (less sinister than conditioned) over the last 20 years. Plus the parks these days are more stressful to be in (no shows or pleasant exhibits or food courts and more queuing) so people don’t have the energy for it.

I'm not sure if this is a permanent change or not, but Marhelorpe on Thorpe Park Mania has reported a change to Derren Brown's Ghost Train that occurred on his last ride on the attraction:
Marhelorpe from Thorpe Park Mania said:
At the end of the experience in the fake gift shop, not only was the floor projection turned off where the demon stands, but this happened......

.....Instead of the demon jumping out from behind the door, we get... Mr. Bronchitis.

All that happened was an actor in a plain white shirt and some trousers stood in the centre, pretending to cough multiple times in all 3 directions at the audience. The poor fella must've had a really bad cold today bless him.

But essentially, the demon costume is no more (as of today), so they get an actor coughing his lungs up to replace it...
Certainly an interesting change if permanent; I suppose it's good improvisation!

That sounds like covering for something, so temporary.

I did DBGT ROTD the other day (my advice leave it till ride close, the. It’s walk on (except for the 20 mins you watch between batches going in)). The actor at the top of the stairs was quite good and creepy, and much better than some you get who just give you some health and safety messages.

Also with it being the end of the day we had quite a few actors in the middle section, even if they are hard to spot with the large groups and random layout it has now.

As for the fake shop. We also got someone in a white T-shirt coughing. Certainly no where near as good as the demon. Also the projector on the floor is broke, as is two TVs on the fake Picsolve wall and of course the floor also isn’t working.

I’ve heard rumours the Derren Brown name will be coming off the ride soon, so assume it will just become the generic VR ghost train and probably make even less sense than it does now.

Would they get rid of the IP so soon? Would have to remake the peppers ghost bit for the pre show
