Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Did Fright Nights a couple of days ago. Have to say, I really enjoyed Creak Freak. I was worried that it had been hyped up by reviews, bloggers etc, but actually it did deliver. It helped I was put through the 'Bad wood' tunnel *insert witty pun* and then went round the entire thing virtually by myself. A few bits were naff, such as the projection on the saw etc, but other than that, a good solid maze.

The others however, were poor at best. Blair Witch had seen very marginal improvements, Platform 15's ending was laughable, and the Living Nightmare needs re-working, as it seemed very stale.

Overall, it was improved on last year, which was a total and utter disaster, but if they can get all the mazes up to the standards of Creek Freak, then I would be a happy bunny!

Some pictures if you're interested (none of the inside of the mazes!) https://www.flickr.com/photos/themeparkmania/albums/72157711451568862

I heard one row got lost in the post.

But yeah, I assume it was one way or another about saving money, although in the grand scheme of things I wouldn’t have thought it would have saved a massive amount. I always felt Inferno got harshly treated, because it got compared a lot to the original Nemesis. I remember people calling it Nemesis Inferior. When it was new, it was an impressive ride in its own right, even if it didn’t have the rich backstory Nemesis has, the soundtrack wasn’t quite as memorable and the layout’s a bit more standard. It was a lot of fun though and nicely presented. But out of all the Merlin coasters, it’s one of the ones that’s aged the worst/been the least looked after. Admittedly I haven’t been to Thorpe for a couple of years, but last time I went the track was very faded, the wheel guards were missing, there was no mist in the tunnel, no geysers, no mock lava flows, yellow foam was poking through on the volcano. I wonder how much it’d cost to bring Inferno back to how it was when it was new. I know enthusiasts do sometimes go to parks looking for things to complain about, but unless they've done some signifcant work since I last visited, Inferno really does look run down.

I think it’s a great coaster in Thorpes line up. Comparing inverts obviously Nemesis has the upper hand with its terrain and forcefulness. I do think Inferno is fantastic though and quite intense with a back row ride.

I love inferno personally, it’s very smooth even on the back and pretty forceful tbh. It’s biggest issue is that due to its name it will always be compared to a far superior ride which is arguably the most iconic invert in the world

I think inferno is a great coaster. It would have been better received has the ill judged nemesis not been attached and it was just called inferno!
I agree, whilst I call it nemesis inferior I still really like the ride, it's inferior if you compare it to its namesake (namely on account of the lack of a quarry) but it's not a poor coaster.

Would the comparisons really stopped with a different name? Surely as enthusiasts we compare two via rollercoaster type not names?

The comparisons might not stop but I don't think it would be getting called nemesis inferior.

The name doesn’t help its case, it’s like if a father and son are both professional footballers, the son will always be compared to his Dad because of his name

I think you can argue that the name doesn't help its case in niche circumstances but at the time it was built the word on forums like this was "Thorpe Park are building a Nemesis ride" - that was quite a powerful message.

Inferno is a great ride, no doubt about it.

I've grown to enjoy Inferno a lot more as a ride as of late. I mean don't get me wrong, out of the B&M inverts I've ridden it still ranks at the bottom, but it does appear to have gained a newfound speed in recent years.

The theming is looking horrendous though. But that complaint applies to a lot of rides at Merlin parks.

Heads up for any standard Merlin or TP season pass holders. Free entry to Fright Nights next week. I take it this means they aren’t hitting their expected guest numbers?

That’s a move that shows desperation.

If the park is as busy as it historically is for next week and add in extra people who can now enter for free then it’s a move they’ll regret as the park won’t be able to cope.

They should asking why aren’t people visiting...

Could certainly be that they're not meeting budget. For a company seemingly averse to committing to too many operating hours, it's bizarre that Fright Nights has so many associated with it.

With half terms being all over the place all over the country, perhaps they have struggled to predict crowds.

Fright Nights was one of the strongest brands the park had for well over a decade. Was regularly hitting capacity daily just a few years ago. I think the event has faltered behind other haunts, not to mention last year's general disaster.

How does this year's offering in terms of number of days compare to previous years? Do they always do two full weeks + all the weekends?

I think @ihaveaspergers does Fright Night marathons, as I recall?

Yep, I'm on day 11 out of 18 in a row (last year was 12 in a row).
It feels less of an event then last year even with the much improved mazes.
