Six Flags Magic Mountain: General Discussion

Don't worry, this post is not to say that West Coast Racers is close to opening, because it is not! Although it does seem that some electrical testing has begun.

Premier have revealed some technical data at IAAPA in relation to West Coast Racers, and turns out that it is going to have a throughput of only 500-600pph. For comparison, Ice Breaker (SeaWorld Orlando) will have a throughput of 680-810pph.

I know enthusiasts are real babies when it comes to capacity, but surely when you have 19 coasters, I don't think you need to seek to shift 1500 folk per hour on each?

The experience that they're trying to deliver with the ride doesn't lend itself to vast capacity, in the same way a Wild Mouse or Free Spin doesn't.
 
I know what you mean, but in a park that gets crazy long queues across the board during peak times, surely you want new additions to have as good a throughput as possible?

West Coast Racers is likely to appeal to a wide range of people and I do think a throughput closer to 1000pph would have been preferable.
 
Potentially, but it won't be the new addition forever, or for very long at all come to that if Six Flags current approach continues.

It does get busy, but if you think about it, a park like Cedar Point has a larger attendance spread across half as many operating days. You can't build your standard capacity to service your peak, that's the economics of madness.
 
500/hr is a fair bit more than a lot of their coasters will typically achieve - unless it's operated like Twisted Colossus, I'd expect WCR to be lower too. Given that we're talking about SFMM where a ride as long as Goliath stacks almost every cycle, despite operating a train down on its design capacity, I'm not particularly hopeful.
 
It'd be cool if they could get this open around the Christmas period, to really push their 365 day operating calendar.

Could be a bit of a push, but rides have opened a lot quicker after such testing.

It would be nice, but at this late stage I reckon they're going to brush 2019 under the rug and push it big as NEW FOR 2020. Maybe some soft openings though
 
Wow - it works! Good to see it finally testing, although I feel like they could have got to this stage much sooner if they had really wanted to.
 
WCR will soft open to season pass holders on December 21st and December 22nd.
 
People will actually get on it in 2019 then. You can always rely on Six Flags, brilliant work! :p

I know they want it to duel, which is great, but the long stop in the middle of the ride really kills the pacing.
 
It's like 2 ok coasters stuck together. The break kills any flow that might have made it feel like one big ride.
 
The break might get shorter as teams and guests (of which a huge percentage have a season pass). a good crew on Twisted Colossus hauls ass to get the trains out - not all crews, admittedly.

Also, anticipation for nervous riders will make the break interesting for some.
 
I can see what they were trying to do but surely someone must have realised that with SF style operations the wait time between the two parts of the layout was always going to be extremely long? Even if they've maximally streamlined the process with separate onload/offload and a system to avoid bag faff those trains aren't the quickest to load as the comfort collars are pretty fiddly.
