I hope that within a week the weather will begin to get warmer and it'll quell this. As for this being disease X I don't think it will be so bad. I think we have the ability to contain this.

There is some interesting studies going on. A team that looked at survival of the common cold and flu last year. Have been at it again with covid 19.

I have put it in a spoiler as its a bit long

How long do coronaviruses persist?

The first section of the new paper focuses on how long coronaviruses can survive on inanimate surfaces, such as tables and door handles. The authors show that, depending on the material and the conditions, human coronaviruses can remain infectious from 2 hours to 9 days.
At temperatures of around 4°C or 39.2oF, certain versions of the coronavirus could remain viable for up to 28 days. At temperatures of 30–40°C (86–104°F), coronaviruses tended to persist for a shorter time.
At room temperature, a coronavirus responsible for the common cold (HCoV-229E) persisted significantly longer in 50% humidity than 30% humidity. Overall, the authors conclude:
“Human coronaviruses can remain infectious on inanimate surfaces at room temperature for up to 9 days. At a temperature of 30°C [86°F] or more, the duration of persistence is shorter. Veterinary coronaviruses have been shown to persist even longer for 28 d[ays].”
When the scientists delved into the literature on the persistence of coronaviruses on different surfaces, the results were variable. For instance, the MERS virus persisted for 48 hours on a steel surface at 20°C (68°F). However, on a similar surface and at the same temperature, TGEV survived for up to 28 days.

Anything over a week without symptoms makes it almost impossible to contain, so it doesn't really matter if it is 2 or 4 weeks.
Rumours of two families in isolation on the Fylde coast already.

If the weather gets warmer, more people will be out and about, and it will only spread quicker!

Actually, experts are hoping the opposite will happen. They are hoping that the warmer weather will kill off the virus. Take the flu for example, we dont get it in the summer because the virus doesnt like the hot humid weather. We will have to wait and see if the same happens with this one....

I do believe that some of the countries that are affected with the virus are hot countries, including Asia, Australia and the Middle East

Indeed though many are still in their "winter" period. This chart is taken from the website below which has many interesting charts. One of which is this one showing the growth in cases in countries classed as being in "winter time" at the moment...

Oh boy, here we go! Hotel in Teneriefe on Lockdown, Travelers from Northern Italy advised to self isolate,

From Matt Hancock
""Once it gets to that point there isn't a way to stop it coming into the UK in a big way,"

I think the only real solution is to shut the country down for a month. Complete Isolation with goverment organised food deliveries by drone. Would be a horrid situation but would stop the spread instantly.

Temperatures in these countries during winter is equivalent to our summer temperatures. Tenerife is now in lock-down and temperatures out there are currently 25 degrees Celsius.

I think there are many people in the UK at the moment with the virus but who are not yet showing symptoms. Add to that the current flu season will give people sore throats, bit of a cough etc, who knows if its coronavirus or just a bug going around. Shutting down the country to stop anyone coming in and out I would guess is impossible, but yes it would allow us to sort out the cases we currently have.

At the moment, a person with a relatively mild case will take 2 weeks to get fully recovered, bit like the flu. A person for whom it goes on to cause lung problems (which is currently 1 in 7 people) will need 4-6 weeks in hospital.

As for currently 13 cases in the UK, thats not strictly true as 9 have been released from hospital, so we have 4 active cases at the moment.

@RoyJess with regards your comment about Tenerife, they are in lock down because someone staying in the hotel has come from Italy where they have caught the virus from. They didnt catch it in Tenerife and at the moment there is no indication it has spread in the hotel. We will have to wait and see on that one. Same with Australia, all cases there have come from other countries. And still no cases in Africa interestingly....

Could someone please explain to me why you quarantine people inside a hotel that in all likelyhood has air conditioning? Surely I'm not the only one to see the flaw in this? Did they not learn from what happened on the ship?

1) Close the borders.
2) Shoot anyone who sneezes.
3) For Wardley's sake, will someone torpedo that bloody cruise ship already‽

So they tell people to self isolate. But then they are not entitled to sick pay as they are not sick
Government just say. “Work from home”
Well not everyone sits on their arse in an office all day. Flouncing Artois mashing keys on a keyboard
Some people actually do a proper job. A hard days graft.

It's ok, they'll sort a vaccine out soon enough so the ruling classes aren't affected. Of course, there's no way to manufacture that much vaccine for the proles.

hard days graft is one of those phrases that's so meaningless that it just makes me laugh so hard. God knows just how hard it is to funnel that next cup tea while talking about the possibility of maybe getting that job done in the next few days, if the weather fairs up, and...oh yeah, a cuppa would be great ta...if that pallet gets delivered in time.

Well i can't unlock the campus, move rubbish, fix lights, etc from home. There are a lot of jobs that need physical presence on site.
I do love how disconnected the government and higher levels of the health protection are.

I can't remotely operate a petrol station. Don't think it'd necessarily be legal.
