Phantasialand: General Discussion

Phantasialand General Manager: "Hmmmm, this hotel entrance does not look quite as good as I had hoped. How can we make it better?"

Phantasialand Creative Director: "I know! Plant. Plants and greenery make everything better and they are sure to make my already wonderfully charming and welcoming hotel even more wonderful and charming."

Phantasialand General Manager: "You could be on to something here, I am glad we have a true genius as our creative director!"

I really do think if Merlin did a hotel entrance like this, every enthusiast and their dog would be lambasting them.

I guess plants being there means there is no intention to change the facade, no plan to add more details. I was thinking maybe some beams, or lights, or something more creative /steampunk.

But with plants going in that seems extremely unlikely.

I love steampunk but rust only works when setting an atmosphere. Bronze is a better choice for a standout building. As an example the Chocolate Emporium at Universal looks stunning:

More pipes and machinery would make the theme pop.

You guys are all pretty harsh, considering that most of the UK / Merlin Parks have a run-down theming on purpose (if existent at all) ...

AT be like: "How about we put a HB Leisure Stall in Front of it ?"

No.

This is Phantasialand, who are on a different level to anywhere in the UK.

When you build Chiapas, Taron and Black Mamba - the bar is so high.

It's nothing to do with 'well it's better than The Rainforest at Chessington so....'

Could not agree more!

Also I would say we are the last to ever sing the praises of the UK’s many run down themes! We’ve often longed for the day something different would come and whilst still a dark theme, Wickerman was just that, mysterious, but not run down!

I will admit I have warmed more to the hotel facade since the planting was added (planting fan Sam) I feel it has managed to soften it all slightly and takes away from the edge. My main issue now is the office block rehash! It upsets me that I don’t like it so much as generally I am a huge fan of corten steel, but I feel it has its place more in modern city centre design rather than the huge facade of themed hotel!

But let’s wait and see. Another point, corten steel always ALWAYS looks better with a crisp blue sky behind it, so I’ll give it a second chance in the summer ;)

Still doesnt look finished to me, those columns on the towers look like supports for more scenery, but if theyve got round to planting then seems like it was cut. Did something go wrong with finance, maybe even the finishing touches cut because of the virus? Who knows.

Even still, I dont think the quality or style looks bad in relation to the rest the park. It's just those big blank faces seeming pretty odd. We've not seen the main area yet where all the effort has gone

Knowing how secretive Phantasialand are, and this being the most visible aspect outside the park, I firmly believe the wall will get a lot more detailing added towards the end of the project.

To me it’s clear it isnt finished with the metal beams and support structures still on show.

Perhaps already discuss elsewhere, but, with Germany beginning to ease some of their Coronavirus measures regarding visitor attractions, as of Monday 11th May theme parks in the North Rhine-Westphalia region will be allowed to begin reopening. However, perhaps unsurprisingly, Phantasialand have announced that they will not be among them.

The park’s official statement, which can be found on their website and various news outlets, is that there is still a lack of “concrete regulation” in place to define suitable operating precautions. They are saying that once these have been defined they will then work to align their own plans with the regulation.

A recent episode of the “bleib neugierig” podcast co-hosted by Chris Theis who is an executive assistant at Phantasialand responsible for guest relations (some of you will know him better as the face of the park’s video series that the did a couple of years ago), there was some discussion regarding Phantasialand’s reopening.

It seems that they may not wish the open the park with temporary barriers or brightly coloured markers all over the place, and are instead looking for a more “thematically appropriate” solution, so as not to detract from the guest experience.

These sentiments seem similar to those of other parks who have emphasised that people want escapism when they visit a park, so don’t want to visit and see constant reminders of the situation outside of the park.
