Efteling: General Discussion

With their expansion plans having been rejected last year there will not be a 2021 coaster. There was an appeal hearing scheduled in June where Efteling were hoping to get the authorities to reconsider their proposals; however whether that will still take place or be delayed due to the current situation remains to be seen. Even if they were to finally get permission in June the new area and ride wouldn't be done for 2021.
It was rejected due to neighbours complaints about extra noise and traffic concerns.

Ah right; maybe more like 2022, then! Thanks for the clarification @CSLKenny!

Good info right there. Was going to book a family trip there next year. Might put it off and go back to Europa again instead.

Efteling is always worth a visit, it's family park perfection. But if for example Untamed was there id probably go there 2 or 3 times a year.

Joris is a hugely underated coaster and possibly my favourite GCI. It edges more towards 'family coaster' but it's kind of like Wicker Man with airtime. Pure fun.

Aside from the stunning theming, Baron is a turd of a coaster.

@Benjsh It's a lazy comparison but it's like DLP. Ride hardware you'd look at it and say it's not for me but as @Burbs says it's a beautiful park with lots of charm. You can easily get lost in fairy tale forest for half a day, sounds a hard sell but it's charm makes it a great place to be.

When you can easily do Toverland and Walibi in a 3 day trip it's definitely worth doing the 3 :) Don't dismiss it just yet :)

Plus the Pancake House is worth going for on its own.

@RicketyCricket it took me a few visits to warm to Baron but it's definitely not as bad as I first thought. Overhyped a little, maybe. I think Bob is going to be a miss to the park. Can't believe how much I fell in love with that death trap :D

Agreed on Bob. I can see why they got rid of it and also why Max and Moritz fills a hole, but it does leave them down a thrill ride which would be good to see replaced.

I’ll be honest though, even without it, it’s still a fabulous park.

I like the idea of Max and Moritz, but it does look very short and I can't see people going out of their way to ride both sides. To me it would have made more sense if the trains swapped sides (like the Grand National) but go around twice so you get to ride both tracks at the same time.

I agree. Still use both trains so you get the duelling aspect but just one track. I'm sure they could use the same system as Arthur to run the trains at the same time but at independent speeds.

Efteling have shared this wonderful documentary on Anton Pieck, which was originally released in 1995, to celebrate his 125th birthday. To me, Pieck is what makes The Efteling so special - an entire world dreamt up by one man. His distinct illustration style means that medieval castles can sit adjacent to dream portals and nothing will look out of place.

It’s also lovely to see the park 25 years ago as well as what it means to many Dutch people.

I don't know Efteling at all but could this not have gone somewhere else so they could have kept Bob as well? It looks like a good addition for families but I would have rather gone on Bob.

^Bob had reached the end of its serviceable life, could no longer operate in rain and spent large amounts of time closed as they tried in vain to sort its issues.
Additionally the original new coaster planned for 2020 was postponed as Efteling's expansion plans were refused permission (a struggle that continues today) - so a new ride was needed elsewhere in the park.

Plus Max & Mortiz has a vastly higher capacity of 1800, actually has a story, theming, show elements/effects and onride music - the park and their family market its totally an upgrade.

I think they tried as much as they could to keep Bob. Sometimes though with machines you just have to admit it's not worth the bother anymore.

It's an entry level coaster the park didn't have before though. So it's a mixed result really.

I don't think there would be so much upset over Bob if it hadn't been so unique. I had certainly never been on a coaster like it and it was incredible fun.

It's a real shame it had to go, because the family-theill market is somewhat lacking at Efteling compared with the family and kiddie markets.

I think it's a good shout - they tried their best with Bob, no doubt about that. I am sure there was a financial (and speed of construction) advantage reusing the station, but that's a little nod back to the former ride all the same.

The area looks a little sparse but I am sure it will grow in over time.

I visited in both 2017 and 2018 and Bob was closed due to issues. Then in 2019 when I was initially in the queue they had to close due to a brief downpour.

It was a fun ride but when you've got a park that opens 365 days a year they clearly wanted something that would be more reliable. I also went on Disaster Transport on its last day of operation and even that had to close if it rained, and that was inside a show built, before that as Avalanche Run it was constantly closing due to wind blowing sand into the chute.

As people have mentioned the main issue for the park is them not being able to get permission for the expansion and the new coaster they want to build which sounds like it'll be the spiritual replacement to Bob by adding a new family thrill coaster.

It looks like a good themed experience, but the coaster layout does look a bit bland. Still it's better than having a coaster that hardly operates, though Bob was a good coaster.
