[2024] Nemesis Reborn: Construction and Speculation

Apologies Burb, it doesn't take much to get me carried away in these dark days of isolated bank holidays.

Astrodan hit the nail on the head really. You cannot conclude that a ride doesn't need work, based on the smoothness of it. You could say your car is fine because it feels smooth to drive, when that would mostly be based on the wheels and suspension. Without taking into consideration the state of the chassis, engine, bodywork ect ect.

The time will be fast approaching when it needs major TLC to keep it running safe and well. Maintenance that goes above and beyond the preventative and reactive maintenance. That is has received all of it's life, that is just part of the natural life of any machine. I remember small parts of the running rails were replaced back in 2003 / 2004 ish, on the first helix. Almost certainly because of fatigue on the track. I suspect other parts have recieved similar treatment in recent years. It is only natural for any mechanical machine to need big overhauls after a long time of service.

Nemesis is a very intense coaster, alot of stress is placed upon the structure at various parts. Increasing the stress and the frequency it needs work. Alton have done amazingly well to keep it going this long, even more so when you factor the corporate restraints they have delt with over the years.

I also suspect this could potentially be why alot of newer B&M's are tamer these days. Not the only factor, but a contributing one. A tamer ride that pulls less force, directly results in less stress on the structure. Thus reducing maintenance costs for parks in the long run. I would bet my left arm that parks have requested these big massive coasters, but have also asked for maintenance costs to be as low as possible. Easy task for the best coaster engineers on the planet, but that can also be reduced by lowering the intensity of the ride.

I guess the big question really, is how will Alton and Merlin handle this situation. Big capex on an existing and old ride. Arguably the most iconic ride in their portfolio. They did bring Collosus back to life at Heid Park, after lots of back and forth, but it happened. So I am hoping they see the value in Nemesis when the time comes. Even more so that the company is now private. Now they dont have to answer greedy shareholders, there is no excuse to persevere some of the most iconic coasters in their portfolio, which just so happen to be some of the worlds most iconic rides.

Please excuse any grammer or spelling mistakes, the liquor has been flowing.

On the subject of intensity, does anyone know what the peak G-Force figure is for Nemmy? Some places say 3.5, others say 4G.

Blivvy and Smiler are listed as over 4.5G which seems crazy considering how absolutely mentally nemmy goes round her track

I've always thought Nemesis was 3.5g. Remember there's more to it than just the peak G-force though. Consider how long the G-force is sustained and also the rate of change of G-force (called jerk). This can affect how something "feels".
I suppose that does make sense :) Nemmy pulls it throughout the entire course where as oblivion’s is very short lived through the bottom of the drop.

I just can’t believe it’s that low rattling through the helix

There's an insane difference between a momentary peak G.... and sustained G.
Mindbender has been clocked at 6.6g (red train [train 6, 'The Devil's Train"], filled with largefolk, on a good day).
But sustained G-force is a very different matter. What's that KMG thing that's essentially a suspended centrifuge? "XLR-8" or something cheesey like that? That only pulls 3g at best, but it pulls it - AND HOLDS IT - for a ten second burst.

... But those ten seconds? Those hurt.

Anyone been on Nemmy since Towers re opened? They've opened the old top section of the queue line (the bit that goes past the post-lift turnaround). Do we think it will be kept long term or just til operations get back to normal? Makes me want to go back just to walk it.:p

Had two rides a couple days ago, running just as well as ever. Was very nice to see the extended queue again, my friend who's more or a Thorpe guy has never seen either. we only queued 15-20 minutes from that point too, so it's not much of an extension to keep, just needs some TLC in all the extended queues as they are a bit overrun and green.

Given it’s in its 26th season, do you think Nemesis will ever be replaced with the newer vest restraints? (swarm) Is that even possible, have any other older style B&M inverts ever been upgraded to them?

I personally wouldn’t like to see Nemesis altered but if the time ever came it could offer a smoother ride in terms of head banging. Just to put this out there I find Nemesis smooth, I’m just going by other opinions I’ve heard.

I can just see a retrack one day in my opinion, it's too iconic to the park to remove and unlike another icon that was removed (Corkscrew), it still holds its own with anything new that's coming out in the uk to this day. I hope it doesn't in anyway tame the ride, cause honestly id rather see it go than lose its punch.

I’d like to see it retracked, but only if it was exactly the same spec, painted the original colours, tidied the area up properly, replace the metal queue fencing to the original black colours, removing the mass weeds around the pit, fixing all of the waterfalls (not red I know) pressure washing the rocks to bring it back to life, remove the overgrowth near the last inversion so you have a better view of it again.

I need to stop living in the past :(

I highly doubt that Nemesis would ever get the new B&M Invert trains. They would be totally unnecessary for a start (I believe Banshee only really has them because of the final drawn out inversion) and the new trains do look bulkier/heavier than the traditional trains which could cause problems.
