Even if the parks were to open thoughputs would be hit as they would have to wipe down every seat after every ride, and maybe even close certain seats so riders aren't sat together.

That would increase the queue times which in turn would increase the amount of time people are stood together.

I know it's hard, but until there's mass testing in place theme parks and visitor attractions will not open.

The supermarket didn't wipe down the trolley after I used it the other day. I don't see a need for the theme park to wipe down that often. Wash your hands and avoid touching your face.

It's surprisingly hard to avoid touching your face, even more so if you stim and certain stims involve your face!

Then unfortunately people in that situation may need to avoid many public places until the pandemic is over. Even with much more cleaning it will still be very possible to pick up the virus from hands.

Merlin are optimistic....
Interesting they seemed to think they can reopen a week after lockdown, could they really reopen with that short notice?

They won't be opening any time soon and they do know that. They will only delay the opening times a week or so at a time so they can deal with the amount of bookings and tickets that need to be amended. If they pushed the opening times back by one or two months they would be inundated by calls and messages and wouldn't be able to cope.

That what I was thinking but it's just odd the date they picked.

Despite the lockdown being extended by at least three weeks on Thursday you can still book park tickets and hotel stays from 26th April onwards on the Alton Towers website. Rather odd.

Also for those that had already booked for stays from 25th April onwards there is still no update on what will happen to bookings, the website currently states that these bookings are bound by the standard terms with no option to cancel or rearrange without paying fees. Nice and organised as always.

maybe the person who updates the website is sick and cant work to update it
or maybe they have forgot
or maybe they are hoping there will be a sudden u-turn and will be allowed to open next week

For what it’s worth, I had a stay booked for the 26th of April through to the 29th, and I’ve been contacted and rearranged to a later date for no extra cost.

An article in the Express and Star covering West Midlands tourist attractions has a section about Alton Towers. Good to see they have donated ponchos to local hospitals.

Alton Towers
It’s all quiet at Alton Towers in Staffordshire – normally the popular theme park is alive with thousands of visitors each day.

But since going into lockdown, the attraction now only welcomes a handful of engineers to keep the rides ticking over and several gardeners to keep the gardens and buildings looking neat.

The exception to this is Sharkbait Reef by SeaLife, where a team of aquarists still have to go in everyday to take care of their 2,500 aquatic animals.

Due to the lack of visitors, the team have to spend plenty of time with the marine life – playing games and setting fun challenges for them – to make sure they are happy and engaged during lockdown.

Aquarium manager Naomi Sale-Hancock heads up a team of five, for who it is “business as usual”.

She said: “Our team really love what they do. They’re doing a fantastic job as always. We have introduced social distancing and hygiene measures to keep us as safe as possible but apart from that we are running as usual.

“We’ve got 2,500 aquatic animals to look after, doing the daily checks, vital plumbing, food prep, water tests, and more. Our favourite time of day is feeding – the animals get so excited when they see our blue shirts or hear the doors banging – and if I’m honest our least favourite is cleaning tanks. But we keep them clean, nice and presentable for when we re-open.”

Naomi, aged 28, explained that the fish still needed entertaining while there were not many visitors.

“They lack stimulation because there are not many guests. When people visit it’s really engaging for the animals, especially the more intelligent ones like puffa fish or sharks.

So the team try to replicate this by hiding treats in food boxes for the animals to find and open – it really gives them the attention they require. There’s definitely a difference when visitors aren’t here so we spend lots of time making sure they have one to one time. We also keep the music playing as normal – as the animals are so used to it. We don’t want it to be too quiet for them.”

The team are also busy creating a new rainforest display for when visitors return – and are keeping guests up to date on social media with what’s going on at the park.

The park staff have also launched a campaign on social media with the hashtag #AltonTowersTogether where they are sharing images from the attraction, behind the scenes footage, and also creative challenges to keep people inspired at home.

They have also donated ponchos, used at the park, to local hospitals and surgeries for protection – and have also lit the Towers in blue to show their support for the NHS.

I could be looking at it wrong but it seems like it saying, if you booked a short break we expect the hotels to be open after 1st June. So no rough idea when the actual park will reopen

Its because they are trying to get people to no ask for refunds for park tickets, HX are handling the hotel changes (hence the Google docs form saying created inside holiday extras) but they are are limited staff as most are furloughed.

Whats the odds someone with a hotel booking after Juneish, checks in fully expecting the park to be open because they never checked.
