I could be thinking of this wrong but I also thought the last thing they would want is a bad guest satisfaction if they want to entice people to come in 2021. If they have a bad experience this year surely that will put them off attending again?. I could be wrong tho but I know it’s money focused these days.

... it would be lovely to have the park open but Jaysus guest satisfaction would definitely be at an all time low. There’s no way with the restrictions that would be in place that you could make it enjoyable for the average customer.
I'm not sure I agree with this.

The guests who want to go will know what to expect, be prepared for longer queues, closed attractions and other restrictions, so they won't be unhappy. In fact I think they'll be happy just to get outdoors and have a bit of fun.

Guests who would be unhappy with these restrictions or feel like it's unsafe would just stay away, therefore they wouldn't be there to complain.

Course, you'd likely get some who'd go with the intent of complaining about it anyway, but more fool them, frankly.

I am curious on two fronts:
  • Realistically, with the level of social distancing that will be required from opening until the end of the season, how workable is an amusement park? How profitable can the park be if attendance is capped? How do you manage that capping with a relatively high season pass community?
  • At what point in the season does it not make sense to open even if they can? By the time you have completed recruitment (effort required depends how many seasonals have taken alternative employment), done refresher training, stocked the park etc.

You can fully understand Merlin's wish to open all their attractions as soon as they can when they announced plans on Friday to raise money from debt investors and that their current monthly outgoings is £50m with next to no income! Lots of discussion on this article over here

Alton Towers have replaced their Oblivion on-ride video with one that doesn't just point at the sky:

Talking of Oblivion, one thing that has always puzzled me: why do some shuttles pause longer at the top than others? It's a chain that holds them so surely it should be set to a standard time? Or is it connected to the block system so sometimes it holds longer than others depending on where the other shuttles are?

The holding chain is not related to the block system, if you are on the 2nd shuttle you can see the brake before the chain open as the 1st shuttle clears the brakes ahead.

I’m sure someone can give a proper geeky answer, but doesn’t the chain keep going, buts it’s something on the shuttle which holds you still, so I guess if some haven’t had recent maintenance that is why they don’t hold you as much, as it will just slip through he holding mechanism.
