Closed Rides

First post here - spent a good couple of hours reading through some of the threads :) . I've been to Alton Towers a few times, albeit well spread out. Had a great solo visit yesterday when it was quiet, rattling through at least a dozen rides (if you count riding the Nemesis three times in a row :-D )

I don't have vivid memories of the corkscrew, although I'm sure I'd been on it without knowing its significance. Equally, I wasn't aware the log flume had been closed until I couldn't find it, checked the park map and then Googled it. I know the Black hole has closed, because Smiler's on top of it.

There must be dozens of other rides closed over the years - I was curious as to whether there's a definitive list of these, as I'm sure some will bring back memories :)

The park's Wikipedia page lists all the closed rides. Hope that helps. :)

Thank you both. It’s surprising what you forget - like the Swan Rides - which were hardly subtle

I wonder what motivates Merlin to close rides which at peak times might help spread demand - they’re hardly short of space. I guess operating costs? Or are they constrained in how many rides / how much of the park can be built on by their awkward neighbour?

It pretty much comes down to a case of, "how much can we get away with closing but still have people give us money?"
Then it becomes a case of, "oh look, they've still given us money, so let's keep going!"

Welcome, by the way. ;)

On a short note the atlantic locomotive called john that worked the scinic railway its now being restored in crew steam workshop ready for her trip back to the eskdale line
