Scarefest 2020

The problem with lightning is storage and it becomes outdated with hiring you get the most up to date technology.
Towers wouldn't necessarily need the most up to date technology though. Their architectural lighting they use for Scarefest and Fireworks are vastly just coloured flood and wash lights, and there's really no need for them to do much more than that. As long as it's highly IP rated (resistant against water and dust) then they could bulk buy and keep permanently installed. However, it is much cheaper to hire lights than it is to buy outright, so I can see why they'd not opt to do so. A fairly standard theatrical moving profile light could cost upwards of £7k. To hire for a few weeks - a mere fraction of that.

Would love to see project mapping used on the towers.
Last year there were projection-mapped ghosts on a tree near Towers Street. They were awesome, can anyone confirm if they're back this year?

Yes they are, I have seen them in Jack Silkstone's video at 24:02

Those and the skeletons in the Towers window (that are back too) are available on www.atmosfx.com. I bought the skeletons ones for my lounge window last Halloween

...and the pre-lift tunnel no longer has any effects at all (come to think of it, non of the tunnels do anymore). Hopefully this years scarefest won’t be an excuse for cuts in the future, with lighting and effects never returning to previous levels.
I'd imagine that is covid related. Some people would see the smoke and take their masks off claiming they wouldn't be able to breathe properly while going through it with a mask on.

It's probably more to do with the guidance which was published recently about water and oil-based fog, smoke and haze machines, and whether they were or weren't COVID-secure. I believe it's all turned out to be a bit of a myth and that there's no evidence to suggest that they either help or hinder coronavirus particles, but as someone working with these machines in the theatre industry at the minute, we've had to be careful about what we use. I imagine it was the same for Towers.

Anyway, this is a little off topic!

Well there’s plenty of smoke in the scare mazes this year, wouldn’t surprise me if ents have nicked all the smoke machines from wicker man to use in the mazes the two at the top of life one have gone completely, with the spot lights now shining in your face, I haven’t seen the smoke machine work for a long time in the second tunnel. And all the lighting and smoke have been removed from the breaks.

This is completely not true, the loss of effects on Wicker Man is unrelated to Scarefest and entertainments would not be allowed to take equipment from an attraction anyway

Saddened to see no lighting this year for Wicker Man. Out of all the rides at Towers it's easily the most 'Instagrammable' ride and more themed lighting across the resort = more guests taking pictures = more guests sharing on social media = free advertising!

Would be nice if Towers invested in permanent lighting slowly over multiple years, however we have debated this subject since the event has existed. The only positive with lighting is that in recent years there has been some consistency with gels used on the generator lights and some rides have kept themed lighting for multiple seasons.

Still hoping for a 2010 lighting come-back.

The effects on wickerman have been significantly reduced if not completely cut, the lack of smoke and lighting around the area compared to last season and opening year is shocking. Scarefest is a major opportunity for Towers to showcase their Beauty (as demonstrated with how successful Garden lights walk has been), I just wish they’d take more pride in this for future scarefests, and even octoberfest 8pm closes.

Although I booked my 3 scare maze ticket for 7:30p.m, I'm going to start doing them from 6p.m. to 7:30p.m because apparently they close at 8p.m, different to what was assumed when I booked them (which was 9p.m; it said no different on the website). The tickets should still scan in correctly as long as I complete them in a 90 minute period, right?

The way I thought it worked would be that your tickets would activate at 7:30. There’s definitely leeway within 90 minutes though as my start time was 3pm and I scanned into The Attic at 4:40 because after I’d done Toxic Junkyard and AMT my 4pm Time slot for Darkest Depths had elapsed so I did that and then went back to the three to do The Attic - Like I Say it was 4:40 by this time.

Yeah your ticket activates from the time you selected, so @Barnaby Simpson you wouldn't be able to enter any of the mazes before that. From that time you have 90 minutes to complete them.

I mean you’ve booked the ticket for a specific time slot so it only makes sense you enter from then - otherwise there’d be no point booking.

But surely if we booked a while back being told the mazes closed at 9p.m. and then it changed to 8p.m, I have the right to enter earlier to actually get all the mazes done on time. I have paid money to do these mazes so it would be unfair to start at a time where not all of them are possible to complete.

I'd suggest contacting Towers to check. Don't want you getting there an not being allowed in the mazes. They might offer to move your slots back.

Email or call Alton Towers or talk to guest services when you arrive, they are the only people who can give you a definitive answer on how they are managing the scare mazes with the curfew.
