Drop Towers

Where to start!

My most enjoyable drop towers are not neccessarily the ones that scare me the most - Mystery Castle at Phantasialand has me shaking *every* single time I get off because it gives me such a buzz! Tower of Terror (either at DLRP or WDW) is spectacular for its sheer themeing and atmosphere, and those drops give you one heck of a shock!

The *scariest* drop towers.. hmm. Freefall at Movie Park was pretty pant-change-worthy, and Apocalypse always gets my heart pounding. Hurakan Condor was scary for its height, but I actually found the drop strangely dull? It seemed to reach terminal velocity really quite quickly, and then not have much impact after that?

The only drop tower I don't think is worth the time of day is IceBlast (technically shot, but either way, pretty bad :p) - HOW slow and forceless?!

^^ Glad you mentioned an S&S tower, has anybody been on their turbo drops? Are they decent, or do the Fabbri versions like Detonator excel?

I'm not a fan of their shot towers, a bit forceless and boring IMO. Just curious about how forceful their drop towers are.

Giant Drop at Dreamworld Australia was utterly ridiculous, I was only 7 when I went on it and sat at the end of the ride car by myself!

I usually don't go on big drop towers. I'll have to conquer Oblivion first. :D The tallest one I've been on is Skyraker 100 or whatever it's called. It's only about 80 feet tall at Flambards in Cornwall.

I find that some of the smaller drop towers pack a real punch! Venom at WMSP is really good surprisingly! ;D

Haven't been on many drop towers, but the one that I'd most like to experience has to be the new 415ft 'Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom'.

It'll be the tallest drop tower on the planet when it opens in sixteen days. A 400ft drop just seems utterly insane!

Several other people have recommended Venom. Looking forward to doing it soon.

Lex Luthor: Drop Of Doom looks awesome. I'd better start saving ;D

Personally I really like drop towers for some reason, especially Apocalypse at Drayton Manor.

Looks amazing

I don't know about anyone else, but if I did that, there would be something brown and sticky in my pants.

It's a stick ;)

Only been on one, and that was the Jolly Roger at pleasurewood Hills this year, first time been to a park and been tall enough to go on the drop tower if they have one Still i want to go on more now...

I've only been on Detonator - just about says it all about how much I don't like them!

However I don't say no to going on a couple if I want to get the cred and saying I've been on it. Otherwise I almost always opt out of going on them.

I hate full size drop towers with the exception of Mystery Castle which is one of the greatest rides I’ve ever experience (go figure ??? ). I also suspect I’ll really enjoy the Tower of Terror but haven’t had the chance to ride one yet.
Miniature drop towers I’m fine with. I love Th13teen’s crypt and don’t mind the Extremis towers.

I’ve come to the conclusion that what I don’t like is everything after the initial freefall. Panic starts to kick in and overwhelms all the enjoyable emotions. This isn’t a problem on the small towers as it’s over nearly as soon as it’s begun. On the other side of the scale ride’s like the Tower of Terror and Mystery are actually controlled drops so I never feel the need to panic. But when it’s a proper freefall tower of more than 10 meters that’s when I feel out of my comfort zone.

It’s also worth noting that I love vertical drop rides in which you face into the drop (aka. Oblivion). So I suppose if there is a drop tower that tilted into Air’s flying position right before the drop I’d be fine with it.

I've only been on 3 drop towers(Excluding Thirteen), Detonator, Mystery Castle and Nemesis: Sub Terra and I've loved them all, I can't wait to go on more.

Have to admit, I am a big fan of tower rides. In fact Mystery Castle is my favourite non coaster ride (along with ToT) by some distance. Both of these rides are obviously big 'experience' rides, however I am also a big fan of drop towers in the more traditional sense.

My favourite would have to be Scream at Heide Park, such a height and such an amazing drop! Also really enjoyed Movie Park's stand up, floorless, tilting, gyro madness. I guess the fact that they are one of the only ride types to still scare me a bit, really adds to the thrill. We are lucky to have some very decent ones close to home too. Poccy is a great ride and Detonator doesn't half pack a punch for what it is!

Would love to ride Lex Luther someday and am also really looking forward to riding this in August :)

It's more the anticipation of the drop which causes the fear for me, rather than the actual drop. You can never know exactly when the drop will happen - especially on Intamin drop towers - something which will make Lex Luthor horrifying to ride. Might be going to California this summer so presuming it is open by August I might be getting to SFMM and risking it.

I'm with Mattmash in saying that Mystery Castle is my favourite non-coaster ride I have experienced. It is massively exhilarating!
Have been on some of the higher drop towers (Hurakan Condor, Scream) which were amazing, and frightening due to their height.
Detonator still gets me every time though, it really is so forceful.
Drop Towers are pretty much the only theme parks rides that still make me nervous when I on them.

I REALLY do love Mystery Castle but I am afraid Tower of Terror just offers that little bit more...

I forgot about that Lex Luther drop tower, I'm itching to ride on it it looks amazing but lapbars? Really? It was scary enough on its own!

In all seriousness though I do love drop towers especially apocalypse however not so much sitdown!
