I bl**dy hope not. Alton have been producing some bad names lately but if this is the name of the ride it has to be an all time low.

The Smiler is not a Roller Coaster name. It's not a name for anything, but if it was it'd be a cheap scare actor.
Smiler isn't even a real word. Just saying it makes me cringe.

If they have to call it something than use Ashlee's Smile suggestion, or grin. But not The Smiler.

Thank goodness! Construction updates about to become few and far between (bar those taking part in their own version of Treasure Hunt), the ride manufacturer confirmed and a decent back-story in The Sanctuary meant a large gap in the "Things to moan about" department.

Jolly good.

The Smiler sounds like a name for a coaster at a Chinese knock off park, or one at a American carnival.

'The Smiler' just seems, in my view, to be lazy and unimaginative. If this does turn out to be the name of SW7, then I'm going to be very disappointed.

Everyone knows you'll like it.
The coaster itself, maybe, but the name? At this stage, no. Who knows - the name may eventually grow on me.

If the name Sub terra, TH13EEN & Rita can grow on people i'am 100% certain that THE SMILER won't take long, it beats all them three hands down :p I love the name anyway !

I think Nemesis: Sub Terra is a good name, whereas Th13teen and especially Rita are not. It's not really that the name grows on people it is just that people accept it as it won't change. Who can actually say Rita is a good name 7 years down the line? Surely no one, it has nothing to do with the ride in any relevant way.

Anyway, if I'm honest The Smiler is also a rubbish name. I could just about accept Smile, although that is pushing what is acceptable. If The Smiler becomes the name of SW7 then it will be a poor name, put with a strong coaster layout with or without the gimmick (as long as the plans are what we are getting or similar).

Am I the only person who would prefer "the Smiler to "Smile"?

As names for rides at Towers go, it's not in the same league of awfulness as Rita or Th13teen.

On topic of names, am I the only like that likes the name "TH13TEEN"?. I don't it's that bad and it sort of suits the ride well.

Anyway back on topic, Truth be told, I'm too fond of the name "The Smiler" To be perfectly honest, However I think it sounds better than just plain "Smile", I think That sounds a bit too childish.

I don't mind The Smiling, it's better than Rita and Th13teen and its hard to fully appreciate the name until we see its context.

In many ways these leeks spoil that reveal but when the info gets out there we have to report it :)

If they've registered 'The Smiler', does the trademark have to be exactly that or does it also cover related words?

Can they change their mind to 'The Smile', or 'The Smiling' and it still be covered by this application? :)

I think it's also important to remember that right now it's just two words...

Like, the word Nemesis as itself is just a word; until there's a physical coaster behind it and a whole brand of marketing, it's meaningless.

What matters is what the word represents, and as far as I'm concerned if this is the name, it works well to represent the marketing seen so far as some kind of sinister treatment.

"Nurse, marmalisation has proven ineffective... take him to The Smiler."

This trademark submission was made back in June and features a second language of Italian attached to it, so I would theorise that it relates to something at Gardaland rather than Alton Towers.

Most of Merlin's trademark submissions have been done with languages like that, for whatever reason, including the one for Th13teen :)

Hmm...When you put it like that, James, it does seem to work quite well. Maybe this isn't such a bad choice of name after all!

Is that not the point though? To me as Tuggerz said this refers to the ride being a contraption or machine rather than "just a coaster". For me personally, this sounds like an ideal name after the backstory from The Sanctuary setting things up. Being "sent to The Smiler" to be marmalised sounds pretty epic if it's the slant I'm thinking of :D

NEMESIS! AIR! RITA! TH13TEEN! and... New for 2013... THE SMILER
"Hey, like dude, man, shud we go on da SMILER next blad?"

Nope.. It just doesn't work for me...

I like it! It sounds like a machine, as Maggy (;) ) said. It fits in with the idea of trying to cure people, The Marmalisation process followed by The Smiler!
