I think it's too late for him to change tactic but if he had got the opposition on side early on and been more open from the start then we probably wouldn't be in quite the same mess, it would also have helped keep the public on his side.

With 24/7 vaccination centre. Why did they not go for the vague ' this is something we are looking into' and moved on.

Exactly this. Or, just be straight and say they're waiting for more vaccine to come on stream and for vaccinators to be trained. It's not like the public aren't aware of these constraints already, supply restrictions are not down to incompetence when something is in global demand. Which makes the whole "there's no demand" argument even more backwards.

He's not the Messiah
He's a very naughty boy!
(Ok, I'm sorry)

On a more serious note, I think he knows that if he admits incompetence then the opposition and the media will be all over him so he has to be careful what he says.

The opposition have been very reticent to overly criticise and I don’t think saying “vaccine supply is not stable enough to run 24/7 vaccine centres” would have been seen as incompetence. The government does not control the supply, only distribution.

Sometimes they just seem to knee-jerk into lies before they realise the truth is actually fine.

1st vaccinations in India...great.
Estimated 700,000 on the banks of the Ganges for the first (unofficial) day of the Kumbh Mela...not so great.
Can't understand how they are letting it happen in the current situation.

Sources...BBC and CNN.

Other than sending in the army you would struggle to stop 700,000 people determined to congregate.

That's interesting, I read September :p:confused:
That link above definitely says June for me; where did you see September, out of interest?

Very promising news, though, and based on the current pace of the vaccine rollout (which will only accelerate as the government opens more vaccination centres), I wouldn’t be too surprised if this wish came true!

Dominic Raab's been saying this morning that the reason why the UK's asking for all arrivals to provide a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival in the UK is because of the new variants of COVID. Now forgive me for saying this, but why in the name of all that is holy was this not implemented any sooner when other countries have done so? Australia's had arrivals quarantining for two weeks, which is why Adam Hills co-hosted an episode of The Last Leg via Zoom in a hotel room so that he could get the quarantining done in order to enable him to spend Christmas with his family. It just frustrates me that this government seems to be so delayed in how it reacts to changing situations instead of being more proactive.

But there has been no attempt to stop it, there hasn't been any request to stay away, just the usual distancing and mask advice, that has been pretty much ignored, and a reduction in days to "only" forty instead of a couple of months.
The usual preparations and infrastructure have not been done...this is going to lead to a massive humanitarian crisis in the next couple of months, in one of the most populated nations, that through poverty doesn't have the medical services to cope with the pandemic.
Crazy situation.

With regards to the vaccine rollout; to put things into some perspective, approximately 3.5 million people have now received a first dose in the UK, and 324,000 people were vaccinated yesterday alone.

Even if this pace remains roughly constant, I calculate we could have vaccinated the entire UK adult population with at least one dose (best number I can get for this is approx. 52 million) by 16th June 2021. (There are approximately 48.5 million UK adults left to go, and 48.5million/324,000 = 150 days to the nearest day, and 150 days from today is 16th June 2021)

Based on the fact that the vaccine rollout will probably only accelerate from here due to things like 24/7 vaccine rollout coming online and new vaccination centres opening, I think offering the whole adult population at very least a first dose by June is very much attainable!

I think the September estimate might be talking about second doses/complete vaccination, as 12 weeks from 16th June does take us into September.

Based on this calculation, I should point out that the government also looks set to achieve its target of having all of the first tier of vulnerable people vaccinated by the end of February, as I calculate that this could have happened by 22nd February 2021 if the current pace continues.

Looking at the government dashboard cases seem to be dropping in nearly all county areas now which I would suggest has more to do with the tier system than lockdown so far so you would expect the cases to keep dropping.
Whoever is in charge of the vaccination program in England seems to be doing a stella job, whether that’s the government, army or NHS I can’t say as I really know but when you look at the situation in mainland Europe with the chaos over there it shows that Brexit aside we seem to have chosen the right path going alone on vaccines at least.

My personal hope is cases keep failing at a steady rate and schools can return after February half term, I have seen for myself the mental anguish these school closures are having on our youth.

Guernsey prepared back in January last year for this pandemic, they did a hard lock down and locked down boarders except for essential travel. They are the only place in the British isle that is covid free.

Back here in the UK, I see also those at the top setting an example how to follow Boris' plea to stay at home this weekend

To be fair, the lovely isle has a population of about 70,000, and everybody knows everybody else, or at least every mum knows every other mum...so the force of social conformity is huge.
I.O.M. has done very well as well.

I mean this government is appalling, and have mishandled this pandemic in so many ways... but to highlight this non-story is ludicrous. Matt Hancock seen walking alone in a park... when guidelines clearly state that you are permitted to walk alone outside for exercise.

How about we actually concentrate on being critical about government failings, rather than blowing up news stories around nothing?

This government is supposed to be leading us through a pandemic, so it's down to them to lead by example. One of the failings has been those at the top not leading by example. If Boris pleads that we all should stay at home this weekend, regardless what the rules are, then those at the top should lead by example and practice what they preach. The Dominic Cummins effect has already shown how it undermines the rules and leads to people flouting the rules.

This government is leading by do as I say and not as I do example which in my opinion is a government failing and a relevant story, especially to all those that have been following the rules to a T

The incubation period for Covid is 5-6 days on average, the cases began to level off early this week so this relates to infections caught the first week of January. This was week one of the lockdown. London and the south east had an effective lockdown (Tier 4) the last two weeks of December which will have had some impact as well.

You have to start jab 2 before you have finished vaccination of the entire adult population, so after week 11 vaccine 1st dose rates will drop significantly as second jabs will start.

Obviously the plan will be to ramp up capacity to mitigate this but to maintain a June completion date you would need to double the vaccination rate to compensate for the 2nd dose. Possible I’m certain but that’s why the government are saying September as they are factoring in a slow down of 1st doses.
