Thorpe Park: General Discussion

It's a pity that Thorpe Park have descended into this really. Whilst this is fundamentally harmless, and a nice little extra, it's all they seem to get these days. It'll be mothballed by 2024.

They haven't introduced anything I was really chomping at the bit to ride for 9 years now. And prior to 2012, it was something of interest every other year.

Looks like something you'd do once and never again.

It's cool for what it is but as others have said it's essentially a pimped up mirror maze.

I feel for the loyal customers of Thorpe I really do. They deserve better.

Looks a lot better than expected from the POV. Definitely higher budget than that I'm a Celebrity nonsense.

I'd rather a decent coaster/flat ride though... You know like the one that's stood there rotting away which you walk past in the Black Mirror queue.

So the two main investments Thorpe made in the last ten years totalled £33 million.
Alton Towers is probably the only UK park who can say they've had more investment than Thorpe in that time. Shame DBGT was a flop and presumably Merlin are going to be less willing to invest in Thorpe after that.

DBGT just has an unreliable, expensive transit sytem & VR with unconvincing graphics. They should have got a horror game developer to do the story & graphics IMO. I'm convinced there is still a long term place for traditional rides with theming, lighting, smells, animatronics & effects. VR can't replace that visceral experience. For example the Velocicoaster has the caged raptor animatronics in the queueline and apparently you can even feel the breath from them when close enough. Seen a few comments on how Black Mirror would have suited X better as a re-theme. It would have worked really well with that ride.

I actually think Black Mirror might well end up having a longer lifespan than IAC, for numerous reasons:
  1. Reviews are very positive so far, whereas they were somewhat mixed for IAC.
  2. There are no actors and nothing overly complex to run within Black Mirror; IAC had actors, and it also had some effects in there as well.
  3. The mirror maze as a concept probably has a wider appeal than something like IAC.
So as much as it’s not my kind of thing, this looks like a really successful IP effort so far; well done, Thorpe! Apparently, it’s a very thought-provoking attraction!

There is a lot of stuff in there than could stop working though. So many LED bulbs for example and a lot of screens. So much technology. If they 'do a Merlin' and allow it to get into poor shape which they will after 2 years lets face it then it will be forgotten and mothballed quickly.

It looks okay as a filler attraction. Not something I'd wait too long for though.

Based on POVs and having really enjoyed Cabin in the Woods when that was there (the two attractions have a similar vibe) I think this is a good addition.
It's just unfortunate that it's just the latest of many filler attractions that lack long term appeal. It's the same problem Ganster Granny has; good looking attraction in an area (or park in this case) that needs a bigger headline ride so it doesn't have to do all the heavy lifting.

Thorpe Park have gained themselves a new Guinness World Record, as Diags from The Only Way is Essex (I think I spelt that right? I don’t watch TOWIE, so wouldn’t know for sure…) apparently won the world record for “most capital cities named on a roller coaster in one minute”, managing to name 38 capital cities while on Colossus. The previous record was 27.

Well done, Diags!

Sorry to burst your bubble, I've already mentioned it here
