Thorpe Park: General Discussion

I wonder if there was a licencing cost of continued use of the old theme which had the You Me At 6 link.

I doubt it, since the old theme only featured a brief (less than 30 seconds I think) instrumental of the song, whereas this new loop features the whole song.
(Though I don't know how these things work in practice, so I guess it's possible there's some caveat I'm unaware of?)

Oh, if the new loop has that song in it I guess not, just a thought of why they might have bothered as I struggle to think of a reason.

As I understand it the area around Detonator and the 4D cinema previously had a pirates’ theme. When they planned Tidal Wave they originally looked at a pirate theme, but Legoland already had a pirate theme log flume, and they thought that the Amity Cove theme would be more interesting (which I think it was). Then they replaced Pirates 4D with the Time Voyagers film, and any sense of a theme that the area previously had was lost.

You could argue that Angry Birds Land meant that the area had a consistent theme again, which is probably a good thing, and some of the theming pieces are quite nice. It isn’t a highly themed area like Thomas Land, but maybe a step up from what was there before. At least initially it bought back some life into the area. On the other hand, the 4D cinema had a bit more theming when it was pirates 4D, and it was a more interesting film. There are arguments for having a film that fits in with the area and argument for changing the film regularly. At Thorpe Park they’ve chosen to stick with the Angry Birds film, but I think it’s one of the weakest 4D films that I’ve seen. If it was a more entertaining film, I’d find the area more appealing.

I think there is also a problem that Angry Birds doesn’t feel very exclusive. At one time Sundown, Lightwater Valley and Thorpe Park all had Angry Birds attractions, and a lot of parks have Angry Birds plushes on the sideshows. Also, I think the Angry Birds costume characters look a bit stupid.
The angry birds land toilets still have pirate theming on the door signage! Which is just typical THORPE, they don't get enough budget to do theming well long term.

Really? I was wondering what that was.
There's a few other things like that, such as the sign in the nemesis inferior fastrack/rap queue mentioning Atlantis.

They can do theming well, they just don't seem like they have enough resources to do it well consistently.

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think some nice wall art could really spruce up that area of the park, dependant on what it is; maybe it’ll be a nice mural themed around the park, similar to what Alton Towers apparently used to have in one of the monorail stations (can’t remember which one)?

Thorpe already has some already accurate graffiti

If it's done in the same style as Walibi Holland, I can't see it being an issue. Thorpe is essentially the budget version of it these days.

...why? This unfounded admiration is unnerving...
His other work is good, and the park surely wouldn’t do something as needless as changing Swarm’s plaza audio if they didn’t think they’d see an improvement on what was already there.

Besides, I’d personally prefer to assume the best of Nick Hutson!

Admittedly, though, I’ll digress that I’m not personally too keen on it myself from what I’ve heard so far. I should probably reserve full judgement until I’m next at Thorpe, though.

Thorpe receptionist: It's that Nick fella on the phone again asking for work...
Manager: Again?!! That's the sixth time this week.
Receptionist: I know, I know, he says he'll keep calling until we have some work for him.
Manager: Bloody enthusiasts, ok, tell him he can do the Swarm plaza. There's only so much damage he can do with that.

Next day: Carly Rae Jepsen heard blasting out around the Swarm...

:p

Since the change happened I haven't seen such comments. Whether those people have just had a change of heart, egg on their face or what, I don't know. Not saying that's you or anyone here in particular, just a fun observation I've noticed.
Well then for the record I always thought the old Swarm music was miserable and boring, probably just forgettable enough for people to not pick up on specifically. But somehow this revamp has made it even worse by becoming a mess of tryhard ideas.

I think IMAscore is probably expensive. This enthusiast composer will no doubt have lowered his prices just to land the Thorpe job but still money spent poorly I think.

It wasnt the park's priority. Seems more like a backdoor deal to get a mate some kudos—obviously I dont know, but thats all it seems to have done, improved guest experience it has not (like Tomb Blaster).

Also the You Me At Six song was a PR stunt only and made fans cringe at the idea in 2012. People were glad only a brief instrumental was used in the end. How funny that it took an enthusiast to put the whole song in, which was never actually intended for the area.

Someone posted this on Facebook the other day, thought it was worth sharing here. Thunder Rapids in their opening year.

Wow; if you hadn’t said, I genuinely wouldn’t have guessed that this and the modern day Rumba Rapids were the same ride!

I guess it shows what a difference trees and greenery make…

Sorry for double posting, but I’ve booked to visit Thorpe Park this Sunday coming, the 11th July. However, something I never thought of at the time, seeing as I’m not much of a football fan, was that it is apparently the final of the Euros on the day I visit. So my question is; do you guys think this will have any impact on crowd levels, or will the park be any different to usual? I know the match apparently isn’t until the evening, but I wondered whether lots of football fans might be inclined to stay at home and prepare for the match (e.g. match parties etc.), or alternatively whether the park might be busier, with people wanting to celebrate England reaching the final by visiting Thorpe?

My dad’s already said to me we’re coming home at any time of the day if staying any later means he has any chance of missing the match, so I’m hoping for a potentially quieter park, but I don’t know if I’m going to get it…
