Heading to alton towers as a large person.

Hi all,

I've lost a tonne of weight over the past year but i'm still quite big I was hoping to get some advice on what rides i should / shouldn't try at alton towers. For reference I popped to oakwood alone yesterday just to try out the sizes and I was ok on Megaphobia however on speed the restraint came down but just not quite enough to be allowed on the ride.

I'm going with the kids this weekend to alton towers and if possible i'd like to avoid as many walk of shames as possible. I know from previous experience that Nemisis has larger seats so I think i'll be ok there and smiler is supposed to have the biggest restraints in the park.

I have the following info taken from the alton towers website, but I know it doesn't always paint the full picture.
Galactica 48 inches
Rita 48 inches
Nemesis 52 inches
Oblivion 52 inches
The Smiler 56 inches
TH13TEEN Restrictive, please speak to a member of staff
Spinball Whizzer Restrictive, please speak to a member of staff
Wicker Man Restrictive, please speak to a member of staff
Any advice would be very helpful.

From Memory Oblivion has a larger seat too.
I think the standard seats are the 48 inch chest and the larger ones fit the 52 inch chest.
So be prepared to have to move row/seat on those two.

If you fit on Megafobia, then you should be OK on Wicker Man. Do bear in mind, however, that Wicker Man has no seatbelts, so the bar may need to be lower to send than if seatbelts were present, but I think the staff let WM send on one click these days, do they not?

This is coming from someone who has no experience with not fitting in ride restraints, however.

Does this essentially mean, if I can't get in a normal nemisis seat then galactica, and rita are out of the question?

Yeah Nemesis and Oblivion both have larger seats, identifiable by the two seatbelts. They both have test seats outside the entrance.

I don't know, sorry I don't have a large chest.

It might depend on luck to some extent as well and you may get on some rides OK and others are no despite the max chest size being the same.

It's all about shape, I'm stomach heavy and quite wide up top. 18 stone of me has no problem with any Towers coaster.

Rita is by far the most snug for me on my tummy. I'm told the larger breasted have more of a problem with B&Ms.

I would say flats are generally more of a struggle, but as Towers don't have any that's not really a problem
I've not been this year for the retro squad.

Both Galactica and Rita (as well as Oblivion) have a test seat at the ride entrance, so you can check it out before joining the queue :)

I’m a bulky broad shouldered 17 stone bloke with a beer belly and thick legs. The only ride I found really uncomfortable due to my size was Funk n Fly due to the restraints being right on your legs. All other coasters were absolutely fine at Towers for me

Another six foot four bloater with a beer gut I just love to get out at the coasters...
You can get on 'em all with a bit of a squeeze...that Cullossus at Thorpe is a bit of a bugger though.

In fairness, I think most people find Colossus somewhat restrictive; I’m skinny & not exactly tall (not 100% sure, but I think I’m a little under 5’10”; let’s go with 5’9.5”) and when I took my first ride on it in ages last month, the back car had little to no legroom, and even though I don’t have remotely big thighs, the harness felt like it was clasping my thighs uncomfortably tightly.

With that in mind, I can certainly see why people taller/larger than me struggle with Colossus!

I’m about 5’6” or 5’7”, and I find the Colossus trains to have very little in the way of legroom, plus they’re really hard to climb into and out of.

If you didn’t know, the Smiler has bigger seats too, but only on one of the trains. I know cause one of my mates can’t fit in the normal seats but he fits fine when using the bigger ones. When you get to the front just ask the ride host for a ‘big boy seat’ and they will stand you to one side until the right train comes in. Dont worry about being ‘shamed’ either as people are far too excited to notice as they have just reached the front of a very long queue! Lol.
U will have to wait a maximum of 4 trains extra but could fluke it if it’s the next one in :)

I’m 5 10 but can’t get on colossus due to chest size.
I find all intamin seats with the curl up between your nads/foof adds to pain.

Can get on kmg afterburner at local fair or Europe but not at thorpe.

Btw I’m just looking at all the above big blokes sharing their sizes to the internet and I feel empowered!

Let’s have a day out at towers to test this lol

I’m a big lad, 6ft, 48/50 chest and a 40 inch waist and 19st 3lbs. There aren’t any rides at Towers that I can’t fit on, but here’s a breakdown of specifics.

Smiler - No issues, occasionally need a shove
Oblivion - Always need the bigger seat
Nemesis - Usually fine in a standard seat, but need a ride hosts help getting the seatbelt in.
Rita - Usually no issues
Thirteen - No problems at all
Galactica - Usually no problems, but have needed bigger seats in the past (I believe it’s the 2 middle seats in row 4)
Wickerman - No issues of late. Needed a shove when it first opened, but I think they need less clicks for a dispatch now.
Spinball - no problems - cross your legs over in the car, it’ll help the bar go down.

As for flats, Mixtape I fit on fine last trip, but was moved from a left seat to a right one - not sure if the right seat is bigger. Funk n Fly is tight on the thighs but closes fine.

Hope this provides some reassurance - most of all have a good day, stay positive and enjoy yourself!
