The Smiler - General Discussion

I dont get it if its testing then it's clearly not waiting for a part otherwise it wouldn't be able to run until it was fitted. Therefore whoever said they're waiting for a part still is talking rubbish

I feel like we need one of those breaking news banners you see on TV news channels. Maybe it could go in the things to be implemented topic

It was testing the other day & didn’t open so don’t get your hopes up too soon.

Or the part has arrived and since been fitted…

Depending on the nature of the part, they could also potentially be running the ride without it. E.G. if it’s a secondary or minor sensor it’s possible they could be overriding it and are simply cycling a few trains to keep everything else in running condition if it’s been sat. Unlikely these days, but not beyond the realms of possibility.

As always, it’s pointless speculating as it just leads to us going round and round in circles. Hosts and many other on-the-ground people are often not given the full picture, are reciting a line issued by management (“routine maintenance” sounds far more guest friendly than “needs a part replacing”, especially given how much work Towers did in the wake of the Smiler incident around careful wording and communications to avoid putting their foot in it), or in some cases may simply be coming out with different and random things. It’s not unheard of in the past for staff to come up with stories for a bit of entertainment and trolling enthusiasts.

Unless you’re hearing it directly from management or Tech Services, neither of which are particularly guest-facing these days, take it with a big pinch of salt.
 
I heard Nick Varney had his “Your parcel from Gerstlauer will be delivered between 11 and 12 today by Keith” message from DPD this morning so the part must’ve arrived.

As mentioned above, it’s always nice to speculate on these forums but ride hosts probably speculate themselves so we can’t read too much into things :)
 
I'm assuming the part has recently arrived then and been fitted before testing began. If it is true that testing began days ago then either the part they were waiting for isn't major enough to prevent the ride running or they've had a problem with that part and have ventured for a different solution

That was funny I'll give you that. I changed my visit to Thursday now as I think that'll be the better day to go as I imagine Friday will be very busy. That makes it less likely that the smiler will be ready but at least I'll be able to get a night ride on Wicker man...hopefully

Happened to me on the smiler earlier this year and it was my first day back at towers for a few years and had a 50 minutes delay at the air gates and a 25 - 30 minute delay at the air gates on the wickerman last month too.
Not the end of the world, the wickerman breakdown was kinda cool to watch and to see how serious they took it but the smiler one was just kinda like 50 minutes of nothing happening.
 
Given this weekend approaching is typically one of the busiest on the calendar outside of Fireworks, it'll be interesting and somewhat hilarious to watch from afar if The Smiler is still closed.

It’s not the most ludicrous of policies; coasters don’t operate in the rain at all in many places, and it is for a hardware-related reason on Thirteen!
