The parts of the Big One they have replaced so far......would you say they were the most rattly parts of the ride? And has it made that much difference do you think? I haven't visited for a few years now during Covid times.

The 19/20 re-track (the bit by the Boulevard) hasn't changed the ride experience. The 20/21 however they've reprofiled the part going through the tunnel and has definitely a marked improvement.

Parts I'm aware of

They replaced the 1st drop and the turnaround in 1996ish.

Pretty sure the bit by The Boulevard they replaced in 2019/2020 was also replaced around 2008/09.

The tunnel section went last closed season.

And now Star Hill up to the mid course break run.

I found the bit they replaced near the hotel to be awful. The joins between the old and new are really bad and really chuck you around. The bit they replaced near the end seemed fine however.

I miss the jolt in the tunnel to be honest, it was all part of the wild-ness of Big One.

But - if it prolongs its life and reduces wear and tear then it's a positive thing.

They’ve replaced significant sections of track over the years. Despite the current hysteria over any small piece of track being replaced, it’s been happening for years. The biggest difference is that it’s now much more widely publicised because people hype it up and splash it across social media.

Similarly, the perceived improvement in how these track sections ride is overblown.

For a long time, they have replaced individual track sections as required (most noticeable by there being less weathering on the newer bits). They typically only replaced whole 'areas' to fundamentally change them, such as with the drop & turnaround. That approach seems to have changed a little now.

I would challenge @venny a little on the improvement front, it's being done out of necessity but the outcome is certainly a better ride. The trains are still awful but the difference is pretty noticeable on the new stretches. The ride absolutely eats wheels, I would be interested to see how it rode on a longer section of 'new' track with brand new wheels.

It's weird how the Arrow hypers all ride so differently, I recall Titan had awful vibration throughout, Desperado is (was?) pretty smooth but has very strange shaping and Magnum is somewhere in between.

A real effort was made with the 2020-21 retrack to improve the ride experience and reduce the stress on track and trains by altering the alignment. Most notably, the original track in the tunnel went from a tight corner (of fixed radius) to straight with no transition, the new alignment smooths the curve out slightly to avoid this. Most track work undertaken previously (at least after the Nash turnaround was done) was pretty much done on a like-for-like basis.

Would it ever be worth having new trains from B&M similar to Steel Dragon? They’re a very open design and would be somewhat marketable and potentially improve the ride experience. Could work for an anniversary year

Depends whether they would fit the track, as an it's different to B&M's.

S&S offer replacements for Arrow Hypers. They were used on the now defunct Titan at Space World.
