Ride/Park Accidents

I couldn't share it without including this quote from an eyewitness:

"Then it went a little bit forward, like a few inches twice, and we thought we were going to get stuck on the loop upside down and we were really scared and it was really cold."

Oh do behave.

A quote they missed out was
"It was great. I got a free lift hill walk. I have paid good money for that at major uk theme parks"

Talking of that, it always amazes me just how narrow Munchen/Olympia Looping's lift hill catwalk is.

Not really an accident, but wasn't sure where else to post. There are a few contradictions as to what actually happened but there was a fire involving the Conneaut Lake Park Blue Streak, which occurred during efforts to dismantle the ride.

A great ride in its day, but the ship sailed a while back despite some long term efforts to make the park work in multiple guises.

Park statement:

As the GM I would like to make a statement explaining what happened today.

Damage to the Blue Streak was NOT caused by the fire. It was from the heavy equipment demolishing it as per permit this morning.

A burn permit was also issued to have small controlled fires to burn the wood as demolition continued. A mechanical issue occurred to the heavy equipment used to assist in the control, causing the fire to spread to the front part of the loading dock.

To ensure safety the Fire Department was called to assist. Thankfully no one was hurt.

The rest of the Blue Streak will come down in the next few days per permit.

I'm hearing that the government are apparently getting involved because the park owner is thought to have potentially burned the ride down purposefully, so they're investigating for arson... I'm told that the park's present owner really hated Blue Streak, and they started the fire to get demolition permits that the town is currently denying them.

I can't link an exact source, as the source I heard this quoted from isn't available in Britain, but I assure you I'm not making this up...

Blue Streak is a big loss, though, even if I'm not sure how it rode...

Like a shopping trolley on a (rotten) cobbled street.

@Matt N When you say that you "are hearing", I am curious to know what that means. That used to mean that someone had spoken to someone in the industry who is speaking off the record but it feels like it increasingly means it's been mentioned by a Vlogger, discussed on Discord etc.

This is a great review by Canobie Coaster. The way he demonstrates what it was like to ride is hilarious too (Skip to 7:33 for that). :):p

I saw it posted by someone over on CoasterForce Forum who cited a news article as their source... the only reason I didn't embed the news article is because it's not available in Britain.

The post I'm referring to is here: https://coasterforce.com/forums/threads/small-news-from-the-theme-park-industry.42689/post-1125753

When we rode, it appeared that the roof of the tunnel you pass through on the way to the lift hill was a great risk of collapsing on to your head. Also wouldn't have been surprising if it had come off the rails on the turnaround!

Sort of a ride, certainly am accident. No injuries.
From last year apparently, but don't think I've seen it here before.

Fascinating Horror (fantastic channel btw) on YouTube has done a very good video on the 2011 Ride of Steel accident at Darien Lake;

Christ what a way to go. Very sad all round.

I'm surprised the rider sat down and was strapped in without realising the danger. If he had no legs, how was he expecting the lap bar to keep him in?

Its not clear from the report, but I would assume there were no adults in the gondola with her. It sounds possible that the risk would be lower if properly supervised.

That's right, no adults in the gondola. This is where the disjointed nature of American ride safety laws and investigation leaves users so vulnerable to risk. This could clearly happen again tomorrow, potentially with much more serious consequences, and it would have been entirely foreseeable with an opportunity to make safety improvements missed.

Another bit of craziness from the USA, prosecutors will not be filing any charges over the death of the girl on Glenwoods Haunted Mine Drop last year, despite the clear breaches of any reasonable safety responsibility including multiple reported near misses of seatbelts not being secured on the ride previously. The Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety, which licenses amusement rides, fined the park’s owners $68,000 in October and a private civil suite brought by the family will follow, but as for learnings or criminal proceedings which would legislate any changes (which in the UK would be completed by HSE) that's it.

Yep, particularly when the main improvement would be a simple "no under 16s without an accompanying adult" rule.
