In this day and age I am a strong believer that all forms of this dreaded past time should by now be wiped out.

This includes all situations such as 'free entry for women club night' Sexism in the workplace, Sexism in the home, Situations such as Sheila's wheels should not be allowed, and certainly a biggie which is the 1 mostly still in existence: Discounted entries: Female 60, Male 65, (the usual age gap)

Old age pensioners bus pass different ages for different sexes, Heating allowances, Television licence etc. etc. the list goes on.

My reason for this topic? Pleasure Island Cleethorpe's:

http://www.pleasure-island.co.uk/where- ... l?start=10

Towards the bottom: Concessions - e.g. Senior Citizens ** £11.50, ** Senior Citizens please bring along proof of age, +Males are required to be 65 or over and females 60 years or over to qualify for the senior citizen admission rate.

I also assume this is still the case with many United Kingdom company policies and many within the theme park industry? and my strong view is that it should not be allowed, Especially with women having the extra 5 years life expectancy over men.

Of course this works both ways, Things should not be different for women and vice versa.

Discuss.

Race for life anyone? Oh females only even though males get cancer as well.

Car insurance is one thing I'm happy about. With women soon having to pay the same as men.

It really annoys me that I have to pay £1700 for insurance when a woman of the same age with the same car pays £1000 less than me. All because according to 'statistics' I'm more likely to be the one that crashes.

I've come into more near misses with women drivers than men. It still ceases to amaze me how some people are given driving licences (including some men).

i was thinking about this today, when looking through a friend of mine's pictures of the "race for life"

awesome id love to do that someday, my grandmother had cancer, and ive always been one to love raising money for a good cause... sorry what was that?... i have to be female? but i could raise a decent sum of money for a charity i care about?... no? females only?

kthxbye.

The thing I don’t like are these domestic product adverts where a man is depicted as being a domestic retard and not capable of washing, cooking, cleaning etc. And then as he is about to make a huge blunder, the woman will swoop in with all of her household super powers and do the job while simultaneously patronising the man for his sheer stupidity. So by that logic, all men are incapable of working an oven but yet are capable of fixing a car or the afore mentioned washing machine when the woman breaks it because she wanted to wash bricks in it, (because who wouldn’t want clean bricks).

The race for life has always bothered me, if they really are that serious about raising money why stop men doing it. Must lose lots of cash doing that.

Also one that bugs me is the you can have girl only clubs but not boys only clubs any more. When I was in the ATC, they had to accept girls but there was the girls venture corps (which was the girls version of the ATC) and that is girls only. Same with girls in the scouts and girl guides.

I think there should be at least a male equivalent or a male only race for life, at least it'd give men the chance to participate and raise some money.

Sexism isn't funny nor is it correct to make sexist remarks but it can work on both ends of the spectrum as must as women are the victims men can also be victims, there are cases of men being ill treated by women and that must stop as well as the man on woman sexism.

This is such a non-issue.

Men, on average, earn vastly more than women during their lifetimes anyway, so it doesn't really bother me if something is financially tipped in favour of women for once.

Still, it seems a bit bizarre. Did you try e-mailing and asking PI about this before you made the topic? Maybe there's something you're missing...

Same here, My step daughter died of leukaemia. and i would love to race for life. I have been banned by my wife from getting a t shirt printed says. "race for life? Sorry wrong chromosomes" to wear when she, the mother in law and our daughter does it in a few weeks time.

Wow, I can't believe your wife has banned you from deliberately ruining and undermining her charity fundraising attempt! What a selfish thing to do!

Out of interest my Uni does the Relay for Life rather than Race for Life and that's not gender restricted. There aren’t as many of them but having a look at the map on the Cancer Research website it shows a good selection of sites around the UK.

The reason I believe Race for Life is gender specific is because it is their iconic thing that makes the event well known. You’ll probably find they get roughly the same amount of donations anyway as the men who aren’t racing are funding and supporting a woman that is.

Now onto the overall topic of Sexism:
I think it’s important to remember that Men and Women are different. Both sexes should have equivalent rights but this does not necessarily mean they should be the same.

I think alongside misogony, we often have more subtle problems with misandry.

I completely disagree with Sam that it is a 'non-issue'. I am often shocked at how males are characterised in the media as being stupid or much more offensive, being driven purely by sexual desire and without emotional attachment.

Sarah Millican told an awful misandrist joke where she inferred that males would not be capable of writing the classic romantic novels, but would instead "have Elizabeth against a wheelie bin in the first scene." I felt personally hurt by this joke. It was so demoralising and did not reflect how I emotionally conduct myself, and it did not reflect my adoration for the notion of romance. We can't these days tell misogynist jokes unless done so under a thick layer of irony, and that is no doubt a good thing, but I just wish that this was afforded for misandrist humour as well.

Issues of sexism against males extends much further then any of the issues brought up so far. For example: Why is it that in a society with about a 50/50 ratio of men to women that the percentage of males in prison is drastically higher then it is for women? This can only be the result of the cultural expectations for men which women don't have, such as that horrendous saying: 'boys will be boys'. This needs to be tackled and it is a subtle form of sexism which is to the detriment of the male population.

We should continue to oppose the expectations on women that they should live their lives as a homemaker but we should also oppose any detrimental expectations on men too.

The different ticket pricing and the exclusion of men from the race for life is just part of a wider cultural problem where we divide men and women into separate groups. We wouldn't divide people using the biological differences of sexuality or race and that should extend to gender. Equality is equality.

I agree with Meat Pie here you cant pick and choose which part of equality you believe in, you either have equality regardless of sex, race, religion, age or sexual orientation or you don't.

You'll always get some segregation or attitude variations. Women aren't as physically strong/able as men in most cases so there'll always be more men in certain professions etc.

I think sexism has been eliminated enough apart from equalisation of the retirement age - women live longer than us after all.

Long may sexism in humour continue, but I don't believe any topic should be off-limits to comedians etc.
