Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I just went onto the AT website and the Smiler logo flashed up on the screen for a couple of seconds, and then disappeared again... Has it been like this for a while or is this new?

It happened a while ago but hasn't appeared for months. Glad to see it's back!

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

In my top sites on safari the alton towers website is just a picture of the smiler in the page preview. that face is a bit creepy

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Even the sheep?! Wow, Towers are taking this very seriously. This marketing is amazing. :')

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

From TS News:
Advertising for Alton Towers' new rollercoaster for 2013, SW7, has today started to make its way into the national press, in the form of this article in the Daily Mail. The article concerns sheep up and down the country who have been branded with the now familiar 'smiling' logo associated with both the Sanctuary scaremaze and SW7 itself.

Interestingly, the article does not specifically mention Alton Towers itself at all; instead, it claims people have attributed the symbol to aliens and other mythical powers, discussing them on Twitter with the hashtag #creepysheep.

This follows in the trend of marketing started earlier in the week, with members spotting the SW7 logo on posters and train stations everywhere from London to Leeds (see our Facebook page for more photos), again without any obvious link to Alton Towers. It is expected that this subtle marketing of the brand (in a similar style to that seen for Oblivion many years ago) will culminate in national advertising linking the face with Alton Towers and the new attraction, as many guests will have already seen it graffitied all around the park.

TowersStreet are extremely excited to see what more tricks the marketing department will have up their sleeve in the weeks to come, and we will be reporting all the latest appearances of the face as they appear, so be sure to like us on Facebook to be the first to know! Meanwhile, join in the fun over on our lively discussion forums!

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Absolutely awesome display of marketing, really like this. Even better that the general public have no idea what it's about. I love the way they're going about this now...establish a recognisable logo before anything else is revealed.

Top work marketing, top work :)

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

These are the type of marketing stunts they need to be rolling out!

None of this 'scariest ride ever' 'too scary for public' 'elements banned from being built do to fear factor' crap - just a good, solid, fun stunt that gets the nation intrigued and talking.

Got to give it to them, the marketing team at Alton Towers are handling this perfectly! Whether this is due to the new marketing director or not I don't know, but whoever has reshaped things in the department deserves a big applause.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

That should fleece the public! ::) ;D

Great marketing, really like the randomness!

Not sure if its been mentioned (I can't recall that it has), the PR is apparently being done by Cake Group, who also did the Sub Terra lift stunt. http://www.cakegroup.com/uk

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

This. Is. Bah-rilliant. Any more of this random marketing up your sleeves Towers? Yes please.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

This is quite simply brilliant! When I saw the news initially on the train I couldn't help but laugh, I never thought we would be seeing Mr Twirly on sheep. I like that the article doesn't mention Alton Towers at all, very good and clever marketing in my opinion.

And I've just seen Mr Twirly at University station in person rather than photos, looks very good! ;D

:)

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Wow. This is brilliant marketing, and as others have pointed out, it's just the kind of thing Towers should be doing with SW7.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

For those who use Twitter, the hash tag #creepsheep is being used a lot. Just looking through it is quite funny.

VERY clever marketing by Alton.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

There's also a lot of people that live near these farms posting their own pictures of the sheep on Twitter.

I really hope Alton go for putting the smiley face in even more weird places over the coming weeks.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Although the whole point is to eventually link mr smiley back to SW7 and Towers, it still seems a shame that some people can't resist the temptation to look good and explain it's connection right away in the comments section, kind of spoils it lol.

Love how somebody called it a USO (unidentified Smiling Object)!

Nice job Towers. Very funny. ;D

I know! I though that too - what a shame. Although the posters have a QR code anyways to link it up. Apparently lots of people have been stopping and scanning it - probably curiosity more than anything.

That's true about the QR code! I'd have left the code out until later on to keep intrigue in the logo and things like creepysheep going on longer; but they pay professionals who know more than me about marketing haha. ;D

Brilliant use of social media, love it, even if it does allow a few to spill the beans lol.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Well, whatever you might have to say about the marketing after Thirteen - you can't deny that this new style seems to be causing just as much fuss with half the effort.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

I wish I was there when this genius/lunatic in marketing suggested spray-painting sheep to promote a roller coaster! I imagine it silenced the room.
