Horses for (main) courses

I had burgers from Tescos for tea yesterday...........been up all night with the trots.

Sorry, probably old now & doesn't add anything to discussion, but hey!

I regularly buy & eat Kangaroo burgers, and Zebra burgers, purchased from a local farm shop. Lovely, if a little tough.

Also, Tesco isn't the only store to be involved in this story. Sainsburys, Lidl, Aldi. & Iceland to name a few, are also.

I actually felt sorry for Tesco in all this. I hope they'll be Dobbin their suppliers in to the Police!

Satch and I have had kangaroo burgers - they're LOVELY but VERY rich.

I went to Tesco today to stock up for the party I'm having tomorrow.

Sadly, it's going to be a sober one, as they were all out of Red Rum.

Frankl, this 'ascot to be one of the most grand national controversies of the decade...

Was hoping my joke would put people off flogging this *ahem* dead horse, but clearly not.

You know what they say: You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

I had a findus fish pie last night.. I'm wonder was it really fish or was it was Sea horse. :D

So Findus have had lasagnes containing up to 100% horse meat. Why am I not more surprised? :p

Wonder why supermarkets don't actual sell horse meat I would buy some, it's meant to be rather healthy :)

I know that in this country we are meant to be opposed to eating horse, but I personally know loads of people who would at least try it!

I'd want to give it a go so long as it wasn't in a cheap burger or lasagne.

Horse meat is better for you than beef and tastes abit like veil which is also not eaten very much in this country.

I think the reason horse is not eaten here much is because of the British way of not knowing where our food comes from.
This starts by calling cows "beef" and pigs "pork", I'm not sure if our European neighbours do as I'm not a language expert but I'd be surprised if they don't call beef "cows meat" etc.
Anyway they are certainly not as shy about telling there offspring the origins of the meat on the plate like we seem to be in the uk.
Maybe that is the supermarkets fault as they pre pack everything so it doesn't look like it came from an animal (I can remember my mum going into the butchers and buying half a lamb and cutting it up at home, and the butchers always had quater of a cow or half a pig hanging up.)

Or it could just be the British way that we can't stomach eating something that once had a name!

The reason we give the meat of an animal a different name to the animal goes back several hundred years, to the time when French was the language of the upper classes and English the language of the poor. The peasants who farmed the animals would use the English names for the animals (cow, pig, etc), and the French speaking upper classes who ate the meat would use the French names (beef, veal, etc). It's curious that even after we started to all speak English and standardise the language, we continued to use the different names.

It probably does sugar coat things a bit. We tend to feel a bit guilty when we think we're eating Bambi. :p

This may sound odd, but i really don't care that we've technically been eating horse.
I found out about the whole horse meat thing whilst eating a tesco spaghetti bolognese :')
But I think i'd totally still eat horse. I'm only annoyed that they lied and said it was beef.
that's not nice.
but if they called it ''horse lasagne''
i'd totally eat it.

See horse means different things, you can't blame country's for getting mixed up

I've bought a Tesco Extra Value cottage pie tonight. I bet you any money it turn out to be an affected product!

And the award for the cheesiest topic ever goes too.....

On a serious note I feel that eating horse meat is OK and whilst I would not eat it myself I would not be against people eating it. However, when it is shown as beef and and consumers believe it is beef then it is wrong and makes suppliers telling lies to their customers. Apparently it has spread to schools as well. A few days ago there were burgers in my schools canteen and someone had changed the board to make it say horse burgers. I almost died laughing.
