No change in the drops. The lift hill is coming straight off the lorries onto the site and being installed. Next piece just being lifted

Cheers for the information. Maybe they are adding the sections up till the access point so they can still get the crane past for the inverted drop or anything else they need access to. Keep us updated with pictures mate! :D

I've wandered off to make use of the minuscule queues!! Ill be back a bit later to see if there's anything new!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

That lift looks so sneaky peeking out of the ground!

It's really not gonna be long before that's up to be fair, I could imagine they'll be working into the evening to get the final Marmaliser leg on, as well as finish off that lift.

This thing now has some pipes coming up it for cabling or the like. And they've been filling it with concrete.

No change in lift hill status. Although the next bit is on site. Last couple of bits of the drop are also sitting at the top of the site near the toilets too.

Now the fencing has been changed there are a lot of people standing looking and talking about it.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

It's quiet windy at Towers today so it wouldn't surprise me if they are just doing the low-down stuff to keep moving but not put anyone at risk. I would guess we will see a final push over the weekend.

Edit:

Anyone else noticed how unusual the lift-hill track is here, its almost a box girder style (the sort Intamin use for launch track). Never seen Gerst use that style but then again i have never seen a eurofighter have a non-vertical lift-hill.

I'm not saying it's launch track as we saw a lift-hill motor go into the base of this lift-hill ages ago, and they have installed chain-return feeder according to Rob. So not anything spectacular from a riding point of view but it's clear Gerst have been re-thinking their product before building the Smiler.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Aren't Gerstlauer launches usually two tube track though?

At least from what I've seen, gives me that idea.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I would upload my pics from my iPhone but I might wait until later as I just seen rob lurking around the toilets with a camera...no doubt there'll be a big update later haha....my thoughts later though!

It's not a launch, as said chain lift gubbins is on and below it. It's just interesting to see them using different techniques.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I wonder if it's to fit the chain return and what not inside. Most tri-rail tracks go down to bi-rail for chain lifts I believe (Presumably for access purposes, as there isn't much room inside the three rails). Maybe that's what they would have done here, but the extra weight caused by the new train design warranted quad-rail for the increased strength? :)

Ah yes, I notice now :p

It's certainly strange seeing how unique this is track wise, It's certainly not a standard Eurofighter. I'd be surprised if it even was one now.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

A few points from today:

-The wind really hampered progress. The crane was not allowed to extend up very far resulting in one piece of track being installed throughout the whole day (the base of the first lift). They did install some things to do with the chain return feeder also.
-The lights of The Flasher have been installed.
-Most supports are now up apart from a few for the first lift.
-I would imagine the inverted drops will be finished as soon as the wind drops (hopefully tomorrow).
-The minibus car park has now been completely emptied. Everything has been moved to the site.

Photos later once I've sorted through them all!

:)

Just one last pic from me:

Looks like it's going to be one of those throw the balls in the bucket games stalls.

I thought this but it looks the wrong angle...

Here is a normal version:

tubsoffun.jpg

Looks too steep.. unless its a variation..

Also aren't the bucket used on them stalls actually large tubs? They look like skeletal versions instead...could be a different type of game.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

WARNING, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY PICTURE HEAVY POST!!

I may have gone a bit photo crazy today, and this isn't even them all! Quite a lot of changes since my last update though. Enjoy!

Starting in the car parks, as of the middle of the day this was the only meaningful stuff remaining:
P1150575_zpsab6aebb6.jpg

Looking empty:
P1150576_zps7933ae23.jpg

P1150577_zpse7356722.jpg

Now on park. Looking across from Mutiny Bay, shows how tall the vertical lift is compared to the track that was already above the toilets:
P1150579_zps87dea7a2.jpg

Closer:
P1150582_zps3d9cf891.jpg

I think these little pre-drops are going to be really good:
P1150583_zps53713efc.jpg

The second inverted drop is almost done, I reckon it only needs two more pieces of track to be complete:
P1150585_zps822169bc.jpg

A look at the base of the vertical lift:
P1150586_zps0efbe10c.jpg

And the final turnaround:
P1150587_zps5eeff9b9.jpg

Base of the first lift waiting to be moved into position:
P1150588_zps88904bba.jpg

P1150591_zps48ff56d0.jpg

The first inverted drop has less track up, but it looks like all the supports for it are now up. The inverted drops are relatively lightly supported if that's the best way of putting it:
P1150589_zpsd5e1af68.jpg

Another look at the second inverted drop. Notice the big support which is for the first lift:
P1150593_zps15565cbd.jpg

Another mysterious footer. The other one that looked liked this has now vanished/been covered over:
P1150597_zps78c7463a.jpg

It's now clear to see that this will be a games unit:
P1150600_zps4ef4ee05.jpg

Hopefully the building will have more details/theming on it upon completion as it looks awful at the moment:
P1150602_zps229a4269.jpg

A look from the bottom of X-Sector:
P1150603_zpsd0c02439.jpg

The top of the vertical lift:
P1150604_zps794e32a0.jpg

And now looking from the merge point on Blivvy:
P1150606_zpsadc9ee5e.jpg

Lights on The Flasher have been installed:
P1150607_zps799587ea.jpg

P1150614_zpsad025455.jpg

The back of The Flasher's lights:
P1150674_zps6a3c12af.jpg

This white 'lines' have appeared on the wall of the maintenance shed. I assume they are related to painting a pattern onto the wall:
P1150608_zps7fd8c1be.jpg

P1150625_zps91b6a77d.jpg

More of these can be found of the station building:
P1150623_zpsb3841267.jpg

P1150652_zpsa28aff98.jpg

The station, lots of yellow pipes now:
P1150609_zps15424ee4.jpg

There are also dark grey corner strips on the corners around the building:
P1150611_zps531c160c.jpg

A look at the supports for the top of the first lift:
P1150610_zps1e828a14.jpg

Here you can see how steep the inverted drop is going to be:
P1150612_zps35e60c1f.jpg

A clear view of the vertical lift:
P1150615_zps6adbb4ad.jpg

The first lift poking out of the ground:
P1150618_zps8bc427bd.jpg

P1150626_zps9ea046e9.jpg

P1150628_zps4d1831cd.jpg

A better look at the queue line shop:
P1150627_zps6c797a06.jpg

More lift track being delivered directly to the site:
P1150629_zpsd2312df6.jpg

You can see how bulky the track is. It also appears to have magnetic fins on it:
P1150636_zps74526d38.jpg

This photo gives you a really good idea of how the inverted drop will look:
P1150631_zps8dfec930.jpg

A look at The Inoculator, the syringes are definitely going to do something I reckon:
P1150633_zps846ce60c.jpg

The protective films have also been peeled off the syringes:
P1150647_zps28a4f6f8.jpg

Here you can see work on constructing the queue has begun, you can see how it leads into the building:
P1150634_zpsd45c0508.jpg

More fencing and possible queue:
P1150639_zps5001dc88.jpg

An overview of the Marmaliser:
P1150637_zpsfccba3f7.jpg

Not sure if this has been noticed before or not, but there is indeed drainage in place all over the concrete floor:
P1150640_zpsa2c96275.jpg

This is what I like to see, cleaning of the track:
P1150641_zpsbcbb2df3.jpg

Here you can see the 3D textured nature of the lettering at the base of the Marmaliser legs:
P1150643_zps4316402b.jpg

And again:
P1150671_zps825115d1.jpg

More piping, not sure if this is in place or not:
P1150645_zps1a62dc2f.jpg

Lifting some chain return feeder components:
P1150649_zpsbb9aa552.jpg

Here you can see that the pre-drop after the vertical lift is actually quite big:
P1150650_zps5948eb57.jpg

This is the back of the vertical lift, it does look like the fins do retract:
P1150651_zpsdf5fc384.jpg

The indoor section is now being sealed in:
P1150653_zps224d7827.jpg

P1150654_zps482bbda4.jpg

Another look from the bottom of the site:
P1150656_zps0ad3c5c7.jpg

A close up of the station:
P1150657_zpsff9dc168.jpg

A couple of slightly different angles viewing the site:
P1150659_zpse3a52f27.jpg

P1150660_zps7eee8ef1.jpg

Lots of cable work was taking place:
P1150661_zps24644542.jpg

All very impressive:
P1150664_zps115e8f9f.jpg

This box was being filled up with concrete. I think it may prove to be the base/footer of the final leg of the Marmaliser and it may also be where the Marmaliser gets some of it's effects/power from:
P1150669_zps5ed49d79.jpg

Lots more wires on the Marmaliser:
P1150673_zps4ff6c564.jpg

Another look at some first lift track, definitely looks like it has fins:
P1150676_zpsd68b0820.jpg

The cage that goes up the vertical lift:
P1150680_zpsebaa73b7.jpg

Finally an overview from the top of the site:
P1150677_zpsb87aa396.jpg

Phew! I hope you liked all of them! Although nothing massively visible was taking place today there was still a lot to see. Things do seem to be progressing really nicely.

As usual, all photos taken from areas of the park fully accessible to the public. Please do not replicate my photos without permission. TowersStreet may use them if they wish.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Thanks for those Rob!

It's such a shame about the current state of that Games Stall, I really hope it gets some decent theming!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Brilliant photos again rob, thanks for the update :)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

It's really nice to finally see everything coming together, the station, maintance building, queue lines, queue line shop, games stall, marmaliser and of course the ride! I think its going to look amazing when its done, and as far as I can tell it seems they are going all out on this ride, its looking good!
