Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

How do! New to the forum so do forgive if anything I post has already been discussed aha...

Seeing the flaps makes me question live actors? I'm not thinking scare maze just some sort of pre-show/post-show

Also what is rumored about this "rainbow room" :twirly:

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

PVC Strip doors are easy, cheap to maintain and and allows quick throughput without length periods of outside light getting in.
A 20cm by 50m roll of the stuff only costs £73.95 that £1.54 a metre. (all pricing is exc vat)

So why would alton not use it instead of doors

Excellent, I've always wanted to know what it's like to be a bag at airport check-in. Hopefully, for authenticity you get weighed and someone sticks a tag on your head.

When you get off, do you have to ride a baggage carousel until your bag holders come and pick you up?

I'm liking the look of the centre base for the marmaliser :) On seeing a close up photo im guessing they're going to have quite a big base as if you look the hazard yellow stripes dont go to the ground, so I assume the base will go up to there. Probably concealing a door too for maintainance.

I do really hope they put some sort of cladding/dome on the top of it like in the concept art :)

Anyone else get the feeling there may be drainage issues with this massive slab of concrete at the bottom of a hole?

I'd assume that would have been taken into consideration, but I can't help but share your concerns.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I suffer with appalling motion sickness and just watching the offride video James posted has made my stomach turn :( Especially that bunnyhop close to the fence.
I'm usually OK if the ride is continuous (I just throw up once I've made it off the ride) but with the pause for the second lift hill halfway through (by which point my stomach will have had time to think 'sod this!') I am not sure any amount of Stugeron will see me through... It's essentially two coasters 60 seconds apart. :/

There is some drainage in place, however I am not convinced by how effective it seems. I'd say expect rather large puddles in the queue when it rains heavily!

:)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

That's what I was thinking. There seems to be a rather large puddle there already.

Any idea how long this night testing will take? How come its being done through the night, and not during the day? Is it to do with the builders being inside the ride area doing other work?

Knowing John Wardley, it's purely to wind up us geeks.

This image really sells it to me, for some reason. I hope they don't shove big fences all around it.

You know you are at Alton Towers when you walk down into a massive pit on an oddly landscaped path flanked by big rocks.

Not sure whether this is true or not, but I remember hearing a few weeks back (before testing started) that Gerst wanted it to test during the night purely so they could hear how the coaster sounds running by itself. When you consider that Towers is normally quite busy, and Oblivion is very noisy, it certainly makes a little bit of sense at least.

Thinking about it, that could be true but also this way gives AT a lot more hours to complete the ride than the normal way, this way they can work on the ride area/station/etc during opening hours and then get the required testing hours in the evening, which even if they run til midnight gives around 6 hours extra work.

Will we see a similar way of working in the future? Unlikely due to extra permissions required to work late, but could be very worth while from AT point of view.

What that picture doesn't show, is just how steep that slope is! It It looks like it borders on being too steep. I don't want to have to walk up there on an icy or particularly wet day!

It's no steeper than, say, the path from the FV Skyride station to Sub-Terra. :S

Picture from Towers Nerd shows The Marmaliser base starting to be constructed - and it looks BIG!
