Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Am I just super slow in finding out what Marmalise means? I thought it was a made up word (seeing as it has the word smile hidden inside it) but apparently it's Liverpudlian/Irish Slang.

http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-mar2.htm
Marmalise means “utterly destroyed” or “totally demolished”

Amazing. And I mean by the look of this thing, it may just do that! Gonna be a while before I get there though! Looking forward to hearing all about it once it finally opens, I guess this forum is going to have to do for a little while :p

Surely they should have YELLOW grass, just to really mess with people's heads! lol

Alton Towers originally wanted to put down black & yellow artificial grass around the top instead of turf but due to time constraints they couldn't get the stock fast enough for them to receive it and lay it all down. Little tid bit for you! :D

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I far prefer Urban Dictionary's definition of the word:

Marmalise

1. to unleash upon a person and completely and utterly destroy them into a pool of viscous orange bio-soup

2. In the event that a person, unintentionally and unfavourably falls into a vat or marmalade, thus becomeing marmalised.

Example

1.
man1: I'm going to marmalise you because I don't like your head
man2: please don't marmalise me because you don't like my head!
man2: *marmalised*

2.
man: this railing looks very stout and hardy, I might put my full body weight on and....*splash*

Far for amusing :p

I really can't wait until Thursday now though! Every day it's looking more and more complete :)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I need to stress to somebody how thrilled I am about this coaster. I think we can all agree that, first of all, Towers have never spent the time or money on a theme like they have with the Smiler. I personally think it looks incredible and as other people have pointed out, there is a certain campness to the type of sinister that they seem to be going for which is perfect for what Towers does best. I think this could be a case of the theming seeming much more impressive mid ride, especially the effects on the marmaliser; the spiralling things look like they are going to proper mess with your head. The layout looks mental and surely, for a coaster enthusiast, the fact that our park now holds the record for most inversions on a coaster has got to count for something? I think it's amazing.

Apart from anything else, they seem to be succeeding with something that Sub-Terra disappointed me with. Even though a lot of people have pointed out that it sticks out a bit from the rest of X-Sector, the basic idea of government control is being brought back in and pushed to the forefront which is perfect. Even though Oblivion itself has a strong theme, I've still always felt that it would be better to really take over the area too and I think The Smiler will do more to increase that feeling than detract from it.

At the end of the day, if people are still going to complain about this project then they're never going to be happy. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea but just look at it!

And one more comment, the view of the Towers from the top of both lift-hills is beautiful. Also, having never been on a vertical lift-hill before, I love the way you have to stare into the clouds. Having said that, I'm sure the good old Staffordshire weather will soon put me off that idea.

So, I think this is the right topic to post my latest update in.

I decided to pop along to Towers for a couple of hours this afternoon in the hope that I would see The Smiler testing. Typically this didn't happen. However I had an interesting conversation with the site manager and got a few photos for you all!

We start today looking at a train sitting on the outside 'maintenance' track, and another in the station:

Here you can see that more theming details in the form of maramalising equations have been put onto the legs of the Marmaliser:

More fencing going in at the bottom of the site:

I'd imagine that this will be where the queue splits for single rider and fastrack etc:

There has been a fair amount of work around the ride entrance:

Posts are in place for fencing leading down the steps:

There we go, I hope you enjoyed! The planting around the site is really allowing things to come together nicely. It all looks so much more complete than it did on Saturday.

All photos were taken from areas of the park fully accessible to the public. Please do not replicate my photos without permission, TowersStreet may use them if they wish.

:)

I'm not an expert on speakers etc. but could this be a bass cannon like they have in the roof of the Nemesis Inferno station? :)

I think the queue is going to go down those steps and to the right, following the path of the construction fence, with the open space to left being a viewing area that you can access via ramp.

Great pictures as always too, the more I see of this, the more excited I get! I can't wait to finally get a ride on!

Great update!
Really glad the Smiler is virtually plastered in Speakers, just hoping the sound doesn't bleed to much into the rest of X-Sector.

Anyone else think it's strange that all the bose logos have been removed from the speakers?

Doesn't surprise me really. They've done it on Ice Age and Sub-Terra too if I remember rightly. It does help make them look a lot less obvious without a silver logo stuck over the black :p

Disney remove all the logos from theirs, except the Freespace domes. The old ones had a logo raised on top which Disney clearly sanded off, but as the new ones are stamped in there's no easy way to get ride of them :p

I have to say I am really liking the 'feet' on the marmaliser legs, they've got some really nice detailing on them which is sadly lacking with most of The Smiler's theming.

With regards to the speakers - what happened to the X-Sector themed ones with the metal casings?

I asked about the path to the left of the steps. It will be blocked off with a gate and is so that a cherry picker can continue to access the site. The slope was said to be too steep for public access when it is icy etc as well.

:)

So basically non-riders will only be able to experience the ride from a fence surrounding it.

That is not the Wardley way at all....
