Cedar Point - Goodbye Disaster Transport, Hello Gatekeeper

I don't understand the obsession with theming. This ride was never going to be like something from Disneyland, because it was made for thrills not theming. Moaning about this ride not having good theming is like buying a Caterham sports car and moaning about the lack of comfort.

Yes but looking at said car, complaining about lack of comfort and consequently not buying that car for said reasons makes perfect sense.

It's all relative. Disneyland and Cedar Point are both very different types of park, and both rich in history and atmosphere, and fantastically operated. But they're completely different, and each to their own, but I'm pleased to be able to appreciate both.

I'd travel half way across the world to ride maverick... Gatekeeper on the other hand? Not so fussed about... However, I'd sell my left nut to go to cedar point! Gatekeeper though, It just seems, well, meh! The second Half looks to be there for the sake of making the coaster longer, it meanders back to the station...I can't stand that on a coaster, plus that flat spot right after the turnaround seems so unimaginative

Looks beautiful though :)

Cedar Point is one of the few US parks that actually appeals to me. You can keep you Disney rubbish, I'll take the 300 foot tall unthemed thrill beast over the bore fest of Thunder Mountain any day. ;)

Cedar Point is one of the most over-rated parks in the world...

So much mediocrity in one place, it's quite funny really... Especially with Cedar Fair's operations *facepalm*

Agreed. Give me a car park monster over th13teen any day of the week! Don't worry mate, we'll get there one day!

See, you say that, but the point I will just put out there, what happens if it was Th13teen on a car park ;) So then what would you rather opt for, the themed or the themeless (Not that 13 is particularly themed! :p) What say's it has to be a massive coaster just because it's on a car park, a car park coaster could also be completely naff could it not? ;)

Besides I'm at the stage where I get 0 thrill from a coaster. So erasing that from the equation, theming and landscape is a big part of the enjoyment factor.

Along with high G-s and a wide variety of air time and craziness.

Sadly gatekeeper doesn't look like it has any of those things, it looks pretty and fun, just not worth writing home about.

There are rides at cedar point that do catch my eyes though and would love to visit at some point in my life.

If theme parks were Pink Floyd albums, Alton Towers would be Wish You Were Here and Cedar Point would be the Wall.

See, Alton Towers is made up of a few really solid coasters that have no real weaknesses. It's stand out coaster is Nemesis, like the song Wish You Were Here, which is only marginally better than the rest. And although it's not quite as good as the Dark Side of the Moon quality such as Disney World or Europa Park, it's pretty universally acclaimed as being a very good theme park, although not being as famous as some of the other theme parks.

Cedar Point on the other hand is pretty much all filler with one stand-out coaster. You've got Maverick, which is the Comfortably Numb of the theme park world, and then the rest are just boring. The over-rated Top Thrill Dragster, Magnum and Millennium Force are the the Another Brick's in the Wall of the park, being the most popular, but actually really pretty uninteresting. And, although with casual fans of theme parks it's liked, the more knowledgable about theme parks you get, the more you realise it's mainly just filler.

The best explanation of theme parks....Ever!

I'd rather visit a park like Cedar Point or Magic Mountain, that has loads of ridiculous, high G rides with no theme than a park with lots of theme but weak rides. Theming is all very nice to look at, but it doesn't make you feel anything physically, which is surely the point of rollercoasters. Cedar Point has lots of filler, but it also has this, Maverick, MilF, Raptor and TTD. If you're looking at a park with these sot of rides and thinking "Yes, but they also have lots of dull stuff" then I think you're missing the point.

Also, Alton Towers is more like The Wall.

Also The Wall > Wish You Were Here

But still, that's possibly the best analogy ever.

It's opinions like this:

Why you, incorrectly, believe:

And the analogy doesn't quite work, because I would still love to go to Cedar Point anyway.

All the theming in the world can't make a bad ride great, but a ride doesn't have to be themed to be great.

You could have the best themed Wild Mouse in the world, I'd still rather ride CP's Raptor.

An amusement park has a totally different purpose to a theme park. Both try to achieve the same goal (entertainment), but they use different methods to get there.

I don't get why some people want 'themeing' all the time. It's totally pointless to pretend a massive bare rollercoaster like GateKeeper is anything other than... a rollercoaster. People should be able to enjoy such a ride without having to 'pretend'.

Rollercoasters may be given decoration to lend the ride some kind of identity. But that is different to a ride where the theme is integral to the whole experience.

Nemesis, to use a well known example, really is a monster. Figuratively speaking. It certainly feels that way; it couldn't be anything else. Likewise Oblivion really is an experimental machine. So, the best 'themed rides' are when the theme and ride are inseparable, if that makes sense.

Shame Raptor's worse than Silver Bullet...

I don't have an issue with Gatekeeper because it has no theme, I expect that. I just don't find it particularly engaging on a personal level. It isn't enough for me to put some money down, fly out there and ride it is my thing. :)

I'm not saying it needs to be themed just anything below 5 metres around that ride is as ugly as hell, the station is basic, the ground is concrete, its such a shame because the track itself is beautifull

from a distance it looks stunning, up close, not so much. It doesn't need theming, but some nice landscaping, some nice shrubbery and trees will go down a treat.
