[The Smiler] Construction Updates / Ride Speculation Part 2 *SPOILER FREE*

It seemed a little hasty announcing an opening date so soon after testing started. And looking at Rob's photo's from yesterday, there was still plenty to be done around the site to have it completed by tomorrow morning.
Hopefully it will be up and running for everyone visiting at the weekend, especially as it is the start of half term.
AT will learn nothing from this though as long as it's open by the weekend. Regardless of the amounts of people who are out of pocket / disgruntled by the delay, they will all flock in as soon as it's up and running. They may have a quieter couple of days this week, but that will be it.

I think if they mention their 'FIFTY AMAZING ATTRACTIONS' much more, people's heads will start to explode...

This is utterly ridiculous. I cannot believe that after all this time, The Smiler STILL isn't open and we're already coming up halfway into 2013. The lack of planning and premature date advertising is just a joke and, as TheMan says, they should've checked over details with precision before even planning a date like the shambolic PR party.

I'd LOVE to hear their reasons why, I'd honestly love to, but it'll take so, so much to convince everybody who was going to make the effort to visit tomorrow and possibly over the next few days. They could not afford to screw up so badly at such late notice.

Wasn't it reported that there was a power issue at the press event, soon after a cable was then dug up near the ride. Putting two and two together could there be an electrical issue? The ride has been functioning fine with people riding it despite the original support issues with the lift so I can't see it being that. We can only speculate I guess.

Maybe they forgot to install the washing machine. :p

In all seriousness, this is a huge PR disaster for them. To declare twenty hours before a major attraction is due to open that it won't be open after all is very bad indeed. So many people have booked days off work specifically for this, and for the park to turn around and say that it won't be open the day before it should be is really not good at all. I sincerely hope that management take a long hard look at themselves following this débacle, and that lessons will be learnt. Yes, the weather didn't help at all, but for opening to be delayed a second time is starting to take the proverbial.

Without knowing full details, I find it hard to criticise AT here in my honest opinion. If this is something really unexpected that happened today / yesterday evening, then I guess it's just really bad luck. If they've been too optimistic with this date then, well, AT deserve some of the slack that's coming their way really to be honest. Also, I think they need to lay of the 'WE HAVE OVER 50 ATTRACTIONS' stuff; the whole point of tomorrow (and probably the next few days) would be Smiler; for enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.

Either way, this is a PR disaster for the park, and one they don't really need...

Short of a meteorite hitting the ride, at this point there's really no excuse. They should have ironed out all issues well before opening.

Must be something completely out of the blue and unforseen - AT wouldnt take the decision lightly to not open it tomorrow given all the press it has had. This is a huge slap in the face not just for us, but for them too especially as the ride has been running the past week or so with no "major" problems, except for that breakdown on the press day.

Think they need to change the name of this ride to The Dissappointer

Who'd have thought that bloody Laura Tobin would've gotten to ride it probably a month before we will.

It's failed it's health and safety inspection thing ( don't know it's official title, is it adips or something)

I rang the alton towers switchboard and asked them what was wrong.

Alton towers need to sort something out for all the people that have booked work off and paid for hotels (on and off site) I expect the biggest queue on park tomorrow will be for guest services.

The amount of times they've mentioned their 50 other attractions you'd think they wouldn't have needed to bother investing £18 million in a new one

Citation needed.

I can't imagine the Health & Safety inspection took place the day before opening.

Whoever goes tomorrow, could someone please get a picture of the queue for Guest Services?

I reckon the delay has been caused because the H&S bods noticed there isn't enough scafolding round the site. They'll give it the Rita treatment over the next few days, you watch.

Update from TTlive says it's because of waiting for Health & Safety checks to sign off. If that's the case there's no excuse for that. It surely should have been done weeks ago? i.e before they let any bugger on it.

I don't buy it.
