The Smiler - General Discussion

I wonder how much the issues are costing Gerst? This thing would have run overbudget and it seems nothing has been cut, so i can only assume they are pushing the costs back onto the groundworks team / gerst

Someone must have paid for the massive delays, firstly delaying it from March to May and then another week. I guess who evers fault it all was! Probably a mixture of Alton Towers, Gerst, Groundwork team, designers/planners!

Queued 80 minutes today at 4.20pm.

Throughput is getting there. Maybe a few more tweaks and it can top 1000.

Just as a notice, it's nice to see the drainage system in the pit works well. ;)

Worst queueline EVER.

The drainage issues in the queue do not surprise me at all. I have no idea how much rain there has been in the last week (I've been in dry and sunny Spain ;) ) but if there's ever any torrential rain for any length of time I can see things being so bad they may have to close the queue. The drainage is extremely poor.

Is it back on 4 trains now? On 4 train operation last Sunday they really really knocking the trains out, with practically no stacking. Didn't bother to check what the actually throughputs were though.

Might be going tomorrow with my brother. Im not too fussed about queue length (under 2hrs would be nice) so long as the ride is actually open and running smoothly.

There's always single riders, normally under 30 mins :)

Oblivion remains closed and The Smiler seems to be running alright. Im probably looking too much into this, but could the two be linked? Problems with Oblivion are being put aside as the park concentrate on The Smiler. Could it be power related as we all know how common power cuts are in the area. Could it be that the area simply cannot cope with both coasters at the same time hence why The Smiler seems to be running ok now Oblivion is down???

Im probably way wrong here, but it's interesting that most of the rides down that end are having long downtime, when normally they would do ok before The Smiler was installed.

So the spare part someone mentioned for Oblivion might be electricity?

No Oblivion is just awaiting some parts and the fix to be applied. It's not a power issue.

Clearly missed something here as I haven't seen said information lol
Oblivion is currently waiting on a part from B&M. Once it's here and fitted, the ride will be back up and running. It was, apparently, a bit of a freak issue - hence why it's taking a while.

A new power sub-station was also added for the Smiler, so I would hope there is no power issues with the ride! (Unless of course its park wide/local area).

From what I've heard it's the Gearbox for the lift hill, but thus may just be speculation.

The ride was experiencing a bit of trouble last week - I ended up stuck on the brake run for about 20 minutes a week ago on Sunday as they were having trouble with the lift. It certainly wasn't a routine e-stop for a phone as they called the techs in /:

Does anyone know what the cameras are for in the back of the seats?

What cameras? All that's on the back of the seats is the optical illusions and the restraint lock light. When the restraints are locked this shows green, and when unlocked it shows red.

The cameras between the seats are on-ride DVD cameras which have only been fitted on one train so far to be tested before being fitted to the other trains :)

I thought I saw cameras. When people were saying that there aren't cameras I thought I was going mad, but there definitely was some cameras on the car I managed to get on. I was sat on the second row.

Smiler seemed to be having a few technical problems today. It opened at 10am fine with four trains. But throughout the day it opened and closed, but there was never any major downtime. But I have no idea what the problems could have been!

First time I saw it go down, there was techies under one of the cars on the breakrun, which looked like they were checking the wheels, but it soon opened.

The second time, the ride seemed to be running ok, but they then sent 3 or 4 empty trains, and the ride started ok.

And the third time I saw it down, there were two trains at the bottom of the vertical lift hill, but after about 10 minutes they were sent up and the ride opened again.

Anyway now the towers is open we get some slightly different views of the ride:
