The Smiler - General Discussion

Bit underwhelmed with this one.

It's a great ride, but has a really irritating rattle. Not rough as such, but very uncomfortable. It just rides like any old Eurofighter, really.

Roughness on The Smiler seems to be very train dependant, my two rides on Train 3 on August 12th were remarkably smooth, a little bit of rattle on the outside seats, but nothing too uncomfortable. Its a shame that there seems to be quite a large difference in the smoothness of the trains, because it could potentially make people hate the ride. I really hope the roughest trains are replaced over closed season.

Could this be Alton's version of Thorpe's Reserve N Ride system?

I think the keywords here are

Stay tuned for your chance to get on #TheSmiler quicker than the rest

It's safe to say, it'll be some form of queue jumping technique. Be it the 'Reserve n Ride' or just a chance to win some actual fastracks. I very much doubt it'll be anything else.

A few things to point out on my visit yesterday, I did it three times, twice on train 3 and once on another (didn't see the number), but train 3 is by far the worse train. the whole ride felt horrible, it shock around, rattled and made a horrible noise. On the final ride there was a techie next to me (no idea if he was checking the train, or just fancied a ride), but I commented on it being rough, and he said it sounded like a wheel had gone. Hopefully with that replaced it will be ok!

In other news the Giggler is still known as the Dribbler and the strobe is the indoor queue is either broke or turned off.

Finally got on The Smiler today!

After queuing for 2 hours, I got on Row 2 of a train (I didn't note the number). The ride was fast and intense in parts, as well as being quite floaty too.

I really enjoyed the ride and I can't really compare it to Nemesis as, to me, they are two completely different experiences.

The indoor strobe was working today as well as the other effects. The audio was loud and the Marmaliser effects were working well (apart from The Giggler which was weak).

I nearly went with air and Rita aswell but I'm not a fan of the ride for some strange reason

I have ridden the smiler 3 times and rank it 3rd in my list of favours

1. Nemesis
2. Air (cause im weird)
3. The smiler
4. Rita

My conclusion on coaster rankings now at Towers is

1) Nemesis
2) Smiler & Oblivion
3) Air
4) Rita
5) Spinball
6) Th13teen
7) Mine train

I get the feeling that next season Smiler will drop into 3rd place after the novelty value has worn off :D
