Gazag's guide to halloween 2013

It has the best setting for its mazes in the form of the towers themselves and offers a very atmospheric setting while in the ruins and around the grounds of the towers themselves however there is only a small portion of the park that gets the halloween treatment and other than some lighting and dark rides its a shame that half of the park isn't in the halloween spirit.

Other things to do?

this is only a short guide to the best events in the uk, when they are on and prices for them. there are many other small events taking place around halloween including paranormal investigations, parties, fancy dress, discos and more in your local towns.
theres also plenty going on around the dungeons in london, warwick, edinburgh and blackpool as well as the london tombs so if you have time theres always plenty to do.
Have a horrifying halloween and remember to check under your bed, lock your cupboard and keep a night light on because there are things that go bump in the night and they're coming to get you.......EVERY.......SINGLE......ONE!!!!!

Cracking topic been the last 2 years to Farmageddon its quality, booked up again! Thinking about the Morgue live aswell as Scarefest of course !

Great post that Woolley Edge October Screams looks a awesome new event, think everyone in South Yorkshire or near should get down to it.

due to venue problems leeds fright nights has been postponed till 2014

very sad news indeed

I really can't recommend Twin Lake's Halloween offering. It's truly astounding what they manage to pull off at a children's park! :)

another reason to get to Burton Screamfest

farmageddon press night was last night (17th of September). we are awaiting the reviews of the event

if you haven't got your Halloween planned best get too it. not long till everything starts

With the family to the woolley edge (christmas tree) place and I think me and Sammiiiiii are going to the Doncaster Racecourse Circus thing too.

Maybe Scarefest, but not sure I can be bothered after last year and theres nothing new to see.

Have tonight done my first 'family' scare event known as Cannon Hell (based at Cannon Hall, Barnsley)

I had no idea what to expect, so we set off me, Hubby, Boy and Princess set off. Its a pretty remote place to drive and through the woods and country lanes, it sets the scene well. The kids were a little nervous. It was recommended age 10+ but Princess was feeling rather brave so we went for it.

You park in the main car park, a good walk away from the house, there are painted signs directing you to the house. Each hand pained in a rushed fashion and many warnings to 'turn back' and 'go away' etc, its a nice walk through the woods to set the scene.

You pay in the main house, which you are taken through a few rooms and briefed, about not touching actors etc. As you head down a staircase theres a tiny strobe section from a kitchen with a maid staring at you who then slams the door as you approach.

We were led to a little courtyard where a video is projected onto the wall - it featured possessed girls who were led away from the house. Ending with the words 'don't go in the garden'. And you are led to the 'formal gardens' which has a little walk around including a few props that are sensor activated.

We then joined the batching queue in the gardens under a marquee. It wasn't really clear this was the case, perhaps a sign or staff member would have helped. There was a good sound and light package in the gardens while you waited with a heart beat sound that sometimes changed to a beastly growl at the same timings.

After a 15/20min wait, we got into the final batch area. Which was really odd.
We were batched in groups of 10s, you received a talk from a lady with abit of background and the rules again. But while she was doing this a man was throwing (what should have been sinister) comments after her, but he was just so very cheery it didn't work.
Also the talk was given to each 10 people, but they cycled through 2 groups at a time. So 1 group would go into the gardens, one received the talk. Then another group came in and the talk was done again, so you would hear it twice. It seemed to be making double the work for no reason.

Anyway, at this point we were let into the gardens... so SPOILERS ahead!

You meet your tour guide, whose torch is your only light for the walk ahead. You set off and instantly meet another guide, who says one of the previous guides is missing - can you keep an eye out for her. This guide then leaves to search for her too.

After a little walk (past a giant washing line to close the path in) you are told some history such as 3 witches who loved the forthcoming lake. Just as you set back off, someone jumps down from a tree screaming 'don't go any further'. (its quite a jump too!)

There are signs warning you off. You approach the lake which is covered in smoke and lit well.

There are apparently all 3 figures around the pond but I think I only spotted 2.

Further you go into the gardens, where just in the distance you can see bodies moving around lit by UV. Its a simple trick but its nice. And pushes your guide to take a route she didn't know.

You come to a point where there is a huge collection of bones and flesh all over a tree, with the 'missing guide's phone and torch, which looked amazingly disgusting. Then immediately behind you theres some quiet sobbing, getting louder.
The other guide is seen hidden in the trees, when your guides torch fails!
An impressive strobe effect is used as you she approaches you closer and closer then screams and then begins chase, we all ran too led by our guide whose screaming matched our groups.

You reach another crossing point where the guide guesses to turn left. You approach a tree which houses 4 life size plastic dolls. 2 of which have been hung, the other 2 twist in the wind on the ground.
Suddenly the lower 2 jump to life and run at the group, you set off running again to the right, where another demon from the trees emerges and sends you the other way.

You eventually end up back at the start, where your guide bids you goodnight and nightmares.

I was genuinely impressed with the effort and scale put in by the place. There was a story to each scene but no overarching story, which was a slight shame as it could have easily been done.
As I said before the batching was odd, but thats the biggest problem I could find - which says a lot.

We paid £16 for a family ticket, which is a bargain.

The event is on again tomorrow for halloween, from 6pm - 9pm - I strongly suggest going and go early if you have a family with nothing planned.

--

Speaking of being a family, we all enjoyed it. The Boy thought it was clever, and screamed a good few times. Princess was freaked out by the finale and rightly so, the costumes and masks were well done.

I enjoyed the pace, we did properly run too! Which adds to the event. Anyway a great time was had by all, and the kids while they were probably a little too scared during it have gone off to bed rather cheery and not complaining.
