Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Seriously, I am perplexed about Slammer.

I spoke to staff from Thorpe Park who said that the ride had been condemned to the scrap heap permanently in the middle of last season after the breakdown left some riders stuck on the ride for ages. After so many problems in recent years, I was told that they had no choice.

Weird.
What you heard was probably the staff member's opinion. Your standard Thorpe Park worker doesn't know a great deal about the future, less so or equal to our knowledge of it. They get tired of saying "I don't know" to enthusiasts, and so they just give a guess or their opinion.

I would definitely trust the Facebook page more than the staff member.

Whilst I agree that I would trust the FB page, the staff member is a personal friend and, having worked at theme parks, I have quite a few contacts. This is not simply a case of some geeky enthusiast bugging a typical ride host for answers.

Re: Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park confirmed on Thorpe Park Mania's forums that Slammer will reopen in 2014.

Weird. Seems like they reverted the decision last minute?

Re: Thorpe Park

Im pretty sure its part of Marketing who post on FB/Twtter/FB so I'm sure they would be more aware than most people regarding the ride!

Re: Thorpe Park

They probably realised that as they don't seem to be getting anything new next year they might as well spend some money on getting Slammer fixed! :p

^ I wouldn't be so sure about that...

Re: Thorpe Park

Chessie said essentially the same thing on their Facebook page, and we know that they're not getting anything worthwhile...

The park also stated that they want to bring back Reserve n Ride for everything... 2014 is shaping up to be a crappy season by all accounts in the UK...

Re: Thorpe Park

From what I heard, they wanted to add another system onto Slammer and it was down to whether they'd get a budget for it as to if they'd keep it or not. They obviously have if they're reopening it.

Re: Thorpe Park

Regardless of if Slammer is staying or not I've always thought they should try to keep it operating because unlike most flat rides it can only be built at a permanent Theme/Amusement park. For this reason I tend to class it as a signature ride rather than just a filler.

Of course if it is costing more than it is worth they have no other choice but to remove it.

Re: Thorpe Park

Thorpe before posted a picture of The Swarm's train under maintenance. An interesting view of what the Wing trains really look like beneath the plastic exterior!

Re: Thorpe Park

A few details of some of whats coming up for 2014 have been released today:

A new waterside hotel replacing The Crash Pad - Seems they will market this more as a hotel i guess to appeal to families although the rooms will be similar.

MOS is returning with 6 dates and the best news of all so far is that Summer Nights are back every Friday and Saturday night from the 11th July till 30th August - Good to see even more dates for this!

So Thorpe are doing away with the Crash Pad? I thought that 2014 was simply going to be a Crash Pad extension and the permanent hotel wouldn't surface for another few years.

Re: Thorpe Park

From what I understand there will be no permanent hotel in 2014. Thorpe Park are cutting all ties with Snoozebox, 'The Crash Pad' will be dropped however the shipping containers will stay and run as Thorpe's own shipping container hotel.

Basically it's staying the same with a name change.

Hopefully though, with this change Thorpe will be able to make some minor changes to the shipping containers to make them more appealable.

Re: Thorpe Park

The rooms are all going to be new - as far as i know the Snoozebox rooms are now gone.

Merlin are building their own modular version which will be made to "look like" shipping containers. They have permission for something like 150 odd (maybe more!) rooms. They will have different formats too so just double rooms / family rooms and interconnecting rooms also.

Re: Thorpe Park

So it's essentially another temporary hotel but this time it's built by Merlin?

Why the hell they'd 'theme' it to look like shipping containers though is beyond me.

Even non-shipping containers at Merlin parks are themed to shipping containers.

Please tell me that's not actually true? Why on earth would anyone choose to make a hotel look like shipping containers?

:)

Re: Thorpe Park

I don't think it's a matter of them choosing to make the new hotel look like shipping containers. It's more of the construction of module units always ends up with a shipping container look. It's not really something that can be escaped. They are just boxes connected to one another!

Assuming the plan is to keep this type of accommodation until 2024 at Thorpe, from Merlin's point of view there will be very little point in making it look extravagant or more than boxes connected to one another when the whole thing will be gone in a decade.
